‘Raani Mera Naam’ (1972) was produced by R Venkateshwarlu and B Susheela Devi and was directed by K S R Doss. The cast included Premnath, Ajit, Vijayalalitha, Madan Puri, Anwar Hussain, Iftekhar, Natarajan, Jagdeep, Jayashree T, Faryal, Vijayalakshmi, Baby Sridevi, Baby Seema etc. Nazir Hussain, Sulochana and Pandari Bai made their guest appearances while Vinod Mehra made a special appearance in the film. Ashok Kumar and Om Prakash made their friendly appearances. This was Sridevi’s first appearance in a Hindi film as a child artist.

With this film, Vijayalalitha got her first lead role in Hindi film. She has been well known as the ‘Female James Bond’ of Telugu and Tamil films and often paired with Jaishankar who has been known as ‘South Indian James Bond’. Apart from acting in numerous Telugu and Tamil films, she has acted in Hindi films such as ‘Sadhu Aur Shaitan’ (1968), ‘Baazigar’ (1972), ‘Lok Parlok’ (1979) and ‘Hathhkadi’ (1995).Vijayalalitha is the maternal aunt of a well-known South’s film star and now politician, Vijayashanthi.

The film was a Hindi remake of the Telugu film ‘Rowdy Rani’ (1970).The protagonist is a female Robinhood type of a character who wants to eradicate society’s evils by taking law into her own hand against a group of antagonists. It is a revenge saga based on protagonist’s childhood traumatic experiences in which her parents are brutally killed by decoits. She grows up with an intent to take revenge against the people who snatched her family away. She learns all the fighting skills required to tackle her adversaries. She kills all the three main adversaries by deception thus fulfilling her revenge. Basically, it is a film made in the lines of a James Bond film with gender reversal allowing the protagonist to act also as a seducer to get the vital information.

The story of the film in detail is as under:

A group of four decoits under the sound of heavy rains in the night enter an estate. They overpower the security guard (Iftekhar) by making him unconscious and enter the house, killing all the family members except Rani (Baby Sridevi) who hides from the decoits. After looting all the jewelries and money, the decoits escape after setting the house on fire. Rani rushes out of the house and tells the security guard who has become conscious. Since Rani has no one from the family to look after her, the security guard becomes the caretaker of Rani.

A grown-up Rani (Vijayalalitha) under the care of the security guard, takes a vow that she will take revenge of each of the decoits who killed her parents and her brother/sister. Her caretaker gives her all the documents of assets and cash which her father had left for her. With this, she begins her revenge journey. Rani has kept herself ready with learning horse riding, training in weapons and fighting etc.

Based on her intelligent inputs, Rani visits a city and goes inside a hotel with the intention of taking a room as she suspects from her intelligence inputs that one of the decoits owns the hotel. However, when she sees in the hotel club that a person, Naseebchand (Jagdeep) is being cheated in the card games and has lost all his money, she restores his money by firing gun shots in which a CID Inspector in plainclothes, Anand (Vinod Mehra) helps her. The Hotel owner, Amritlal (Ajit) rushes after hearing the bullet shots and thanks Rani for saving the reputation of the hotel by making the rogue gamblers run away from the hotel. He allocates a special room for her in his hotel. Apparently, her room is bugged which Rani comes to know from her special gadget. She escapes from her room when Amritlal sends his men to kill her.

Rani’s suspicion becomes almost confirmed as she has come to know that Amritlal’s goons are planning a bank robbery about which she informs the local police station. She foils the bank robbery and hands over the captured goons to the police station. On the way, she meets Naseebchand and lures him by getting back all his lost money in card games if he accompanies her as her attendant. Disguising as prince, Rani goes in the highly restricted hideout in Amritlal’s hotel and sees Amritlal’s chest the tattoo mark of three aces while she is playing the high-stake card game with him. She shoots Amritlal dead as she had seen one of the decoits with this tattoo while killing her parents. She runs away in the car as CID Inspector, Anand visits the hotel for the investigation.

Rani lands in a village after overcoming the police check posts and road blocks. She stays overnight with a family. In the night, a group of decoits enter her room and kidnap all of them to present before a leader (Natarajan) who orders his goons to drink and enjoy the companies of all the girls. Just at that point, Rani starts dancing before the goons diverting their attention from the girls to her. After the end of her dance, the leader and his goons are so much drunk that they are not in a position to fight. She kills the leader and many goons and releases many villagers, in which include a boy called Ramesh who has been kidnapped for a huge ransom from his father. As usual, CID Inspector, Anand is keeping a track of Rani and meets Rani as she reaches Gopal Nagar to hand over the boy to his father Dhaniram (Om Prakash).

Soon, John (Premnath) gets the news that his gang leader has been killed by Rani and Ramesh has been freed and restored to Dhaniram. John orders his goons to raid Dhaniram’s house and kill Rani who has been staying with Dhaniram as his guest. However, Rani successfully overpowers John’s goons. Dhaniram telephones to his close friend, Dayaram (Madan Puri) about the goon’s attack. He rushes to his house and instead of helping Dhaniram, he kills him and elopes with a bag full of cash and jewelries. In reality, Dayaram has created an image of himself as a politician who helps his people in case of need. He turns out to be decoit, Zalim Singh. Rani who was hiding after she heard the gun shot, see a man running out. But she cannot follow him with Ramesh tied to her. Now she comes to know that Dayaram and John are hands in gloves in kidnapping Ramesh for a ransom.

Next day, she leaves Ramesh in Naseebchand’s house and pursues Dayaram in his office. However, he outsmarts her and put her in a underground cell. She gets to know that Dayaram is planning a train robbery in which Government treasury cash boxes have been loaded. Naseebchand helps her by cutting the railings of her cell and

Rani escapes with her horse to rush to the railway bridge where the decoits have scheduled to explode a time bomb so that train stops and they loot the treasury. Rani defuses the bomb and police team comes on the spot on the information provided by Naseebchand. The decoits of John and Dayaram are arrested.

Next on Rani’s target is Dayaram who is, in fact, decoit, Zalim Singh. Once again Rani, in the guise of a dancer, preforms a patriotic dance in the presence of Dayaram who, as a political leader, is presiding over the function. When she goes to garland Dayaram, Rani shoots him dead as she has recognised him as one of the decoits who killed her parents because he had a false right eye. She escapes from the confusion among the crowd.

The last in Rani’s target is John (Premnath) who in connivance with Dayaram/Zalim Singh was planning the heists. With the death of Zalim Singh, John is furious and is bent upon taking revenge against Rani. In the meantime, CID Inspector Anand on the investigative duties reaches in the outskirt of the hideout of John where he gets captured by John’s goons. He is put in a solitary confinement. More or less at the same time, Rani also reaches John’s hideout with the purpose of taking revenge against him. But in the same way as Anand, she gets kidnapped. She is presented before John who orders to be buried in the cemetery up to her neck.

Rani’s horse shows some anxiety as she has not returned for a long time. The horse rushes to bring Naseebchand who digs out Rani. Naseebchand sees John escaping in his jeep with two trunks full of cash and jewelry because a large police team has killed most of his goons and he has no alternative but to escape. Rani goes after the jeep, riding on her horse. John is confronted by Rani when the tyre of his jeep gets punctured. She shoots John dead thus fulfilling her vow to take the revenge of killing all the decoits involved in making her an orphan.

The film ends with Police Commissioner (Ashok Kumar) appreciating Rani for her valiant determination to wipe out the decoit gangs. He introduces CID Inspector, Anand to whom he had especially entrusted to keep a track of her. At the same time, he regrets that he has to arrest her for taking law into her own hands and he hopes that the court will take a lenient view in her case.

The film had four songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri which were set to music by R D Burman. All the four songs have been rendered by Asha Bhosle with one song as a duet with Manna Dey. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘lapjhap kahaan o jaate ho jaani’ rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for Vijayalalitha.

The context of the song is that while staying in a village to pursue her revenge against her next target of the decoit, Rani (Vijayalalitha) stays in a village with a family where in the night a decoit gang kidnaps all of them including many other villagers along with the loots and present them to their leader in the hideout. The gang leader is happy and order all his gang members to enjoy drinks with the girls they have kidnapped. While all the girls are being taken, suddenly, Rani comes out and starts dancing in front of the gang leader. All other members of his gang return to watch her dance leaving the girls. At the end of her dance, the gang leader and his members are so much drunk that they have no strength to fight with Rani when she escapes with the villagers and girls nor before shooting the gang leader dead.
