When I saw Naqli Nawab (1962) a few days ago, I got into the mood to watch Muslim socials. As it is, this is a genre I am fond of. If nothing else, the Urdu alone is good enough to keep me interested in the film. Everything else – a storyline, a qawwali or mushaira, lavish sets – is a bonus.

So I followed Naqli Nawab with Mehboob Khan’s Najma (1943) and B R Chopra’s Chandni Chowk (1954).

In addition, we also had late Khwaja Sultan Ahmad (brother of music director Khursheed Anwar) as our visitor in the past who shared some unknown facts about the movies. Here are the details of this movie as narrated to us by the two abovementioned knowledgeable experts:

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 48
—————————————–
Ichak daanaa beechak daanaa daane oopar daanaa from ‘Shri 420’ (1955) has become one of the immortal songs of the 1950s. I can watch the video clip of this song umpteen times without reaching the saturation point. For our generation, it was an unique song in that it was the first song for us where riddles had been incorporated with answers in the song itself. n this song, a teacher (Nargis) is teaching her students the identification of a fruit, a vegetable and a bird through the riddles. This was a novelty and the song became a hit in our school so much so that during the recess, we used to devise out own riddles, albeit sometimes with wrong hints for others to solve them.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 45
——————————————-
In the 1940s, Hindi films based on mythological and historical stories were produced among other genres of the film. Minerva Movietone’s ‘Sikandar’ (1941) set the benchmark for this genre of movies. The subsequent movies of this genre like ‘Prithvi Vallabh’ (1943), ‘Draupadi’ (1944)‘, Humayun’(1945), ‘Veer Kunal’ (1945), ‘Samrat Chandragupta’ (1945), ‘Krishnarjun Yuddh’ (1945), Prithviraj Sanyukta’ (1946), ‘Maharana Pratap’ (1946) etc are supposed to have paled in comparison to ‘Sikandar’ (1941) in terms of grandeur, picturisation of outdoor scenes besides screen-play and dialogues.
