When Dhundiraj Govind Phalke aka Dadasaheb Phalke(1890-1944), the father of Indian Cinema, made his/India’s first silent feature film,” Raja Harishchandra”-1913, he introduced the Genre of Mythological films in our country. It is well known that he was inspired by the English film ” The life of Christ”. He decided to bring to the screen Indian Gods and stories associated with them.

Dadasaheb Phalke chose the subject of a Mythological story to make his first full length silent film “Raja Harischandra”-1913, because people could readily identify with such stories. The fact that his hunch was correct is borne out by the fact that religious and mythological films, as a group, continued to outnumber the other types of films for the next 40-50 years.

In India all our social customs, traditions, calenders and Festivals are linked to Agriculture, because basically,even today, we are an Agricultural country. With almost over 70% population (as against 85% in 1947) living in Villages and depending on farming, even in these days. No wonder if all our major events have an Agricultural base.

My attachment to Lord Shiva is from a very young age. We resided in Hyderabad, but my father did his Law graduation from Nagpur. While at Nagpur,h e got introduced to some revolutionaries and he too joined them.
