I was looking up the list of anniversary names on google. Well, of course, I wanted to find out what the 75th anniversary is celebrated as. Now, the fact that 25th is Silver and 50th is Gold, is well known, and well established. Beyond that, going to 75th and on to 100th, I find differing opinions. Many folks would refer to 100th as the Diamond Jubilee, with no specific preference for the 75th. Then again, there are folks who want to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee at the 75th itself going to non specific things like ‘Diamond+Pearl’ Jubilee for the 100th. I am not much convinced with this sequence. Then I found one reference where the 75th anniversary is referred to as Platinum Jubilee. Now this I would think, is a better reasoning. We keep the Diamond for the 100th, and celebrate the 75th as Platinum – more expensive than Gold, but less expensive that Diamond. Makes sense?

Welcome all to the 7400th offering on this blog, which in my opinion should now be renamed as Atul-Six-Songs-a-Day (or maybe Atul-Six-Pack 🙂 :).)
The last century milestone bade a goodbye to 2012, which turned out to be a marvelous year, as far as the accomplishments of this blog and its contributors are concerned. And then, moving on, we are now at the next century milestone, yet once again. A mite longer than regular, this century took twenty four days to arrive, far above the normal rate of one century every sixteen or eighteen days. In the interim, there were some days of travel that took time out of Atul ji’s schedule. But no matter, the interest and participation in the blog continues unabated, with unflagging enthusiasm. And that, dear friends, is the most heartening feature of this blog.

I have experienced this many times, and maybe you too could have experienced the same. The music of his songs has the quality to transport the listener to another place, another time. Just close your eyes and relax – and listen to a song like “Parbaton Ke Pedon Par Shaam Ka Baseraa Hai”(film ‘Shagoon’, 1964). The flowing waves of music will transport the listener to a vista of hills and trees with the sun slowly descending the western horizon. Or the song “Bahaaro, Mera Jeevan Bhi Sanwaaro” (film ‘Aakhri Khat’, 1966). Or the song “Apne Aap Raaton Mein Chilmanein Sarakti Hain” (film ‘Shankar Hussain’, 1976). Or the song “Simti Hui Ye Ghadiyaan” film ‘Chambal Ki Kasam’, 1979). Or the song “Aa Jaa Re Aa Jaa Re O Mere Dilbar Aa Jaa”(film ‘Noorie’, 1979). The best way to write about a poet is to write about his works, his poetry. But when we come to a poet of the stature of Rajinder Krishan, it becomes a very difficult task to write about his poetry. One simply does not know where to start. The body of work is enormous, and the number of pleasing heart stealers is so numerous, that just a sample list of favorites will go beyond a reasonable length for a write up. And no matter how representative one makes this sampler list, readers and friends will come up with wonderful gems of A grade quality that must be included.

Well one of these days, we may come to the bottom of this ocean of melody. Well yes, after all, the music that was created in the first four decades – has been created, and it is not possible to add to it anymore. And so one day we would have discovered all that is there to discover, and would have discussed it here on this blog. But as of now, there is still so much out there in front of us that thankfully, it is still going to be many years before this treasure gets exhausted. And I am sure there is enough for a lifetime. 🙂

Searching for and finding rarities in the world of music, is a keen and interesting pursuit. The Hindi film songs have so many variants attached to their existence. Songs that appear in film, but are not released elsewhere. Songs that are on records but not included in the film. Version songs – the official song in the film and on the record, is also available on record in the voice of a different singer. This case is different from the same song sung by more than one singer and included in the film. Then we have the variations between the song published on record and the song as picturized in the film.

Roshan – a name that spells a purist, a name that is acknowledged as a creator of master melodies. The career of an artist in the film industry is measured by the films one is associated with. In a short career of 19 years, this giant amongst music directors accomplished 56 films. The filmography is as impressive as can be – Baawre Nain (1950), Humlog and Malhaar (1951), Anhonee, Naubahaaar and Malhaar in 1952, Maalkin, Aagosh and Maashooqa in 1953, Chandni Chowk and Jashan in 1955, Agra Road and Coffee House in 1957, Aji Bas Shukriya in 1958, CID Girl and Heera Moti in 1959, and then on to sixties with Barsaat Ki Raat, Baabar, Aarti, Surat Aur Seerat, Wallaah Kya Baat Hai, Dil Hi To Hai, Taj Mahal, Chitralekha, Bheegi Raat, Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal, Devar, Mamta, Bahu Begum and Anokhi Raat. In this sampler list, each film represents a treasure of melodies that would be the envy of other music directors. It is perhaps the inability of our times to distinguish between the “good” and the “great”, the “noteworthy” and the “legendary”, the “impressive” and the “brilliant”, that leads us to use the latter of the two adjectives in each case in far greater measure, and for far more modest achievements than would have been approved of by an earlier generation. Or maybe it is just our laziness, or our tendency to exaggerate, that leads us to our use (or abuse) of the English language in this manner.

I tend to liken the journey of this blog to a train. But nowadays I find the comparison less appropriate because a train stops at intermediate stations for a while whereas we in this blog do not stop at any of the milestones and keep going along, though we may sometimes become somewhat slower than usual for various reasons. So that way, I find the comparison of this blog with a road journey somewhat more appropriate where one need not stop anywhere, and one can see milestones going past at high speed.
