Here is a song that is a very rare song on several counts.

This song is from an obscure movie called ‘Bairam Khan” (1946). This song is sung by not one or two or three, but four female singers ! This song is sung by Geeta Dutt (then Roy), Shamshad Begam, Naseem Begam and Munawwar Sultana.

“Sohni Mahiwal”(1958), as the name suggests is one of the four tragic love stories of Punjab. The other such stories being Heer Ranjha,Mirza Sahiban and Sassi Punnun. Several movies have been made on these tales, not only in Hindi, but also in Punjabi and other languages.

In show business, it is not enough to just silently go about your job behind the scene. One needs to be in the limelight and one needs to keep lobbying with influential people who can help advance one’s career. People who are good in their jobs as well as good in Public relations forge ahead whereas others, who may be equally good if not so, may find themselves underappreciated.

Music director Ajit Merchant is better known for his contributions to the Gujarati cinema and to the theatre world in Bombay. He did venture into the Hindi film world also, albeit his contribution is limited to less than 10 movies. Saperaa (1961) is one of the movies that Ajit Merchant composed music for. I have already discussed a wonderful Manna Dey solo from this movie, some days back. Here is another beautiful gem of a song from the same movie. This is a duet, that is rendered so lovingly by Manna Dey and Suman Kalyanpur. The lyrics are by Indeewar. The lead roles in this movie are played by Jyoti and Ranjan. Other actors in the film are Tiwari, Jeevnkala, Sunder, Uma Dutt, Neena, Rajan Kapoor etc.

The enticement of the tinsel world of films has fostered many real life stories of people from all walks of life giving up their professions and jobs, with an aspiration to make it a success in the film world. The story of the famous composer Chitragupt (full name Chitragupt Stivastava) is also of this kind. Born in 1917 in Karmaini (Chhapra District), Bihar, Chitragupt did a double MA in Economics and Journalism, and was working as a lecturer in Patna. In the early 40s, he gave it all up and came to Bombay with a dream to make it big, not as an actor, but as a singer and music director. He worked as an assistant with SN Tripathi, who became his mentor. In 1946, Chitragupt got his first independent assignment as a composer for the movie Toofan Queen. Not a success on the box office, the film did nothing much to help progress Chitragupt’s career. He would do another 20 odd films between 1946 and 1952, before coming into his own in the early 1950s. The 1952 film Sindbad the Sailor, though not a huge success in itself, its music was very successful. In 1955, SD Burman recommended him to the AVM studios (in Madras), which started an association that lasted for many years. During this time, he composed music for many hit films from AVM viz., Mein Bhi Ladki Hoon, Barkha, Mein Chup Rahoongi, Bhaabhi etc.

I have discussed as many as four songs from “Dil e Nadaan” (1953) but I was not aware of this song. This is a delightful song which is sung by Jagjit Kaur. The song is picturised wonderfully well. The picturisation shows Peace Kanwal singing this song, Shyama dancing on it and Talat Mehmood playing the violin. One elderly gentleman is also visible in the picturisation but I am anable to identify it.
