Many online sources of information indicate that Khaiyyaam made his debut in 1953 with the film ‘Footpath’. This information is erroneous. Zahur Khan, better known as Khaiyyaam, has actually been active as a music director since 1947/48. During the years from 1947 to 1953, he was using a different pseudonym. In this period, he composed music under the name of ‘Sharma ji’. He once shared in an interview, the reason for why he used the name ‘Sharma ji’. His strong interest was music and he moved to Bombay to make a career in films. The years of 1946-47 were very intense with the issues of independence and also the partition of India. A deep divide had occurred between the communities, and a large contingent of film wallahs opted to move to Pakistan.

Produced by P. Aadi Narayana Rao and directed by Vedantam Raghavaiah in 1957, the Hindi version Suvarna Sundari (original in Telugu) is rightfully remembered most for its iconic raagmalika (a multi-raag number) – perhaps a first in a Hindi movie – the famed Lata-Rafi duet Kuhu-kuhu bole koyaliya. It is already on this blog with a comprehensive write up both on the movie and this number.

We are all very familiar with the ‘mujra’ form of dance performance. And there are umpteen songs in Hindi films that apply to this genre. The setting basically is either a family gathering for a social event, or it is the place of the dancing girl. When Atul wrote to me in his usual polite way the other day that I must write a post on this song I was taken aback. I have been a (mostly silent) reader of his blog and I have even written a few pieces for it but none for a very long time. Perhaps he thought I might like to do this piece on Don’s “Khaike paan banaraswala” as most of my early pieces were on Amitabh Bachchan’s movies of that era as I am an unabashed AB fan. What he did not know when he wrote to me is that I had another “qualification” for doing this piece; I studied for five years in Banaras.
