Today’s song is from an obscure, forgotten film ‘ Golkunda ka Qaidi-1954.
When this film was released in Hyderabad, I was still in High school. In those days, in Hyderabad state, in addition to the routine subjects in the school, for the 10th standard, there used to be a novel subject called ” Non-Detail “. There used to be a world famous novel, drama,travelogue or a Biography taught in this subject. The purpose was to acquaint the students with the top class literature of the world and cultivate the habit of reading extra-curricular famous books. I don’t think that this was practiced in any other state of India. This truly helped the students to inculcate interest in reading books other than their curriculum.

The film was made by Punjab Film Corporation, Bombay. It was owned by Wali Saheb, who was the Lyricist and the director of this film. By the way his wife Mumtaz Shanti was the Heroine in this film. The film was made by the Gyan Mukherjee productions, Bombay, by its owner- Producer Gyan Mukherjee, who also directed this film. The film is unique in the sense that this was the only Hindi film, for which the famous singer Jagmohan Sursagar gave the music. Yes, the same famous singer of NFS – Jagmohan Sursagar. What a coincidence ! Last Sunday, I had selected a song from this film to be discussed today (usually I line up 3-4 songs for writing posts). Today’s song is from an obscure but good film Apni Chhaya-1950.
The film APNI CHHAYA-1950, literally means ‘our own shadow’. The story is such that what happens to the father when he is young, happens to his son as well. Only difference is he is the hero in the first case and the Villain in the second phase. The film was made by Chitralaya limited Bombay. The story and Direction was by P L Santoshi, who had also written all songs of the film. The music was by Hanuman Prasad and Husnlal-Bhagatram. There were 10 songs and 7 singers were used. The cast of the film was Balwant Singh, Sulochana Chatterjee, Radhakishen, Mumtaz Ali, Sajjan, Tiwari, Jawahar Kaul etc. Except perhaps the Husnlal Bhagatram duo, major contributors to music, direction, lyrics, acting etc were on the declining stages in their careers.
