Apropos nothing in particular I just remembered of a wonderful song, that led to more songs from the same film. And on an impulse, I checked the blog. And thought, wow, this picture is not yet represented here. (Another category maybe – ‘How come this picture is not yet on this blog’).

Enjoying the film music now in its ninth decade, we are mostly familiar with all the variations, adaptations, improvisations, and of course even outright copying of music items across films, across music directors and across time. A very interesting adaptation / variation to the Hindi film song is a parody. A well known song from an earlier film is reused in a new film, generally keeping intact the melody and the tune, but the words are changed for a comical effect, mostly. We are all familiar with parodies, and I am sure we can surely list a few at the drop of a hat.

And so, yesterday as I was conversing back and forth with Harish ji Raghuvanshi (resident of Surat, compiler of the ‘Mukesh Geet Kosh’) regarding information on the lyricist SH Behari, we started to discuss the general topic of hugely talented lyricists that spent a very small time in the industry, contributed a small number of very wonderful songs and then somehow did not work anymore for Hindi films. Their filmi careers are lost under obscurity.

Ek gaana hai, kareeb chaalis saal puraana – “Chain Se Humko Kabhi, Aap Ne Jeene Ne Diyaa” . From the film ‘Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye’. And the year is 1973. Yes getting to be about 40 years ago. But listening to this song, even today – the sound, the feelings, and the words – all appear to be so young and so fresh. And the lyricist – composer pair is SH Behari and OP Nayyar. A partnership that started in the mid 50s, and flowered exceptionally in the decade of 60s to give so many memorable songs one after another.

Vijay Anand, the youngest of the Anand brothers clan, is a name very familiar. More so as a producer and director, who has to his credit such rollicking hits like ‘Nau Do Gyaarah’ (1957), ‘Kaala Bazaar’ (1960), ‘Teesri Manzil’ (1966), ‘Jewel Thief’ (1967), ‘Johnny Mera Naam’ (1970) and ‘Tere Mere Sapne’ (1971). He was the director for the magnum opus production of ‘Guide’ (1965) for Dev Anand, arguably the best film of Hindi Cinema.

Prakash ji has written for the second time in ‘Readers Farmaishes’ requesting for the upload of this wonderful sad song in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar. The music composition is by that underrated genius – Ganesh. Prakash ji has mentioned that the song itself is not posted anywhere on the internet. So when I read this comment from Prakash ji, repeating his request for this song, I had to pull this out from my collection, and have posted it on YouTube today.

During the summer of 1940, Mahatma Gandhi was in Simla, as part of his travels around the country. A public meeting was arranged that was to be addressed by him. Incidentally, the same day, another public function was scheduled. This program was a music program, and a small child, little more than 12 years in age, was to sing. The public made a beeline for the music program and it is on record that Gandhi ji expressed irritation that his call for a public meeting was largely ignored, and the people preferred to attend a music presentation by a child artist.

Remembering Hemant Da on his birth anniversary today.
This is a very uplifting song, and a very dear memory that I carry from my radio listening days. The manner of rendition contains a conviction in the voice that simply establishes this sentiment to be true – “be a comfort to others, sacrifice your own happiness. . . in the end your own happiness will itself come to you.”
