Daan Singh, a name that may not ring many bells or evoke many memories. Here is one more gem of a song that comes from a grade B/C film. Ek Raat is a 1967 film produced under the banner of East&West Movies, directed by Rajnath. A suspense action drama, in which the star cast includes Sheikh Mukhtar, Simi, Madan Puri, Shyama, David, Laxmi Chhaayaa, Samson etc. The lyrics of this film come from the pen of Yogesh Gaud and the music is by Usha Khanna.

In her memoirs, Kaanan Devi, the premier leading lady of the films in the 1930s, recounts her times and experiences of working with Saigal Saab. As a singer-actor team, this duo has worked together in many Hindi and Bangla films produced by New Theatres, Calcutta, and there is treasure of memorable music these two have created together. Kaanan Devi writes about his simplicity and a childlike disposition that endeared him to one and all. She tells about his unmindful and forgetful nature, especially when engrossed in music. There would be times when the shooting is to start, the preparations are all in place, the unit is ready, and people are waiting for Saigal Saab to come. Sometimes he would be very late, and there was no information where he is. Then someone would come and tell that Saigal Saab has been in the studio for a long time, but away from the hustle bustle of the shooting location, he is sitting in some lonely corner, or alone in a room, with a harmonium, and is simply singing away to his hearts fulfillment. Then someone or the director would find courage to go and remind him about the schedule, and then he would come running, profusely apologetic, and in good humor trying to get the schedule move forward.

Khul Jaa Sim Sim – the name itself suggests that this is going to be a fantasy adventure film, based on the tale of Alibaba, Chaalis Chor from the Arabian Nights. Released in 1956 under the banner of Golden Films, Bombay, the film is produced by Mulkhraj Bhakri (readers may recognize this name as a lyricist also), and is directed by Nanubhai Vakil. A grade B fantasy adventure, the main actors in this films are Mahipal, Shakila, Maruti, Heeralal, Helen, Niranjan Sharma, Krishna Kumari, Naazi, Sadiq, Vijaya Kumari etc.

When the year 1952 dawned, Geeta ji had been singing in Hindi films now for about 6 years, and had an incredible 500+ songs already behind her. On the other hand, the soon to be famous OP Nayyar had composed the background score for Kaneez in 1949, and this film, Aasmaan, was going to be his debut as an independent music director. He became known as a maverick composer and the Melody Maestro in the coming years. OP Nayyar went through a phase in the 50s when All India Radio shunned his music as being too trendy, and Radio Ceylon became the remote beacon for music lovers to listen to his songs. In the mid to late 1950s, he became the highest paid composer in the industry, and the first one to command contracts worth one lakh (and more) for composing.

In his life, and in his death, Saigal Saab remains a mystery. Not much is known about his years of wandering, and then the immediate success as a singer-actor in Calcutta, somehow defies the normal course of understanding life’s events. He was just as he was.

Aao Pyaar Karen (1964) is a romantic comedy from the house of S Mukherjee, and Filmalya Productions, directed by RK Nayyar. The normal rich-girl-poor-boy-love-story, in this case, is presented as a comedy, and not a sob story. The male lead actor, as with many S Mukherjee productions, is Joy Mukherjee, paired with Saira Banu. At the time of making this movie, both the actors were comparatively fresh in the industry, having made their debut in 1960 (Love In Simla) and 1961 (Junglee). The other key players in the star cast are Rajendranath, Madhavi, Marilyn, Shyam Chatterjee, Jayant Shah etc.
