The 1962 movie Rangoli has a bevy of most wonderful songs, some of which are already discussed in this blog. Here is a very soft and romantic duet from the same movie, beautifully sung by Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar. Lyrics are by Shailendra, and the composition is by Shanker Jaikishan.

The movie “Yaadein” (1964) was as off beat a movie as any movie could be. The movie was shot almost exclusively on one set and with only one actor. This movie was made by Sunil Dutt under his home banner called Ajanta Arts productions Sunil Dutt himself was the sole actor of this movie.

The year is 1966. The “Yahooooo” of Junglee has already happened in 1961, and has set a benchmark and a career path for Shammi Kapoor. After having spent a better part of 50s in a set of indifferent roles, Shammi Kapoor found his calling and came into his own in the spectacular success of Junglee.

The movie, Yaadein (1964), is an Ajanta Arts production directed by Sunil Dutt. This movie is a superlative theatrical experience, and one of its kind, at least in the era to which it belonged. This movie is a very daring experimental endeavor created by an actor/producer/director of mainline cinema, for the mainline audience. And yet it is an off-beat movie, of the first water. And believe me, nothing can get more off beat than this.

This great son of Punjab laid down his young life fighting for the independence of India from the rule of the British aggressors.Bhagat Singh was born on September 27, 1907 to Sardar Kishan Singh and Vidyavati in the Khatkar Kalan village in district Layallpur in of undivided Punjab (now in Pakistan). Think of Sheikh Mukhtar, the hero of so many ‘Dada’ and ‘Ustad’ movies, the proverbial angry young man of the 50s and 60s ‘B’ screen Hindi movies long before Amitabh got that tag in the 70s and 80s. Now think of the same he-man in a skirt dress and bob cut hair? And dancing the twist, and pat-a-cake, no less?
