“Heeralal Pannalal” (1978) was a Rishi Art International Production. It was produced and directed by Ashok Roy. The movie had an impressive starcast consisting of names viz Shashi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Zeenat Aman, Neetu Singh, Amjad Khan, Ajit, Ranjeet, Prem Nath, Kamini Kaushal, Asrani, Madan Puri, Tuntun, P.Y.Atlekar, Leela Mishra, Ramesh Deo, Lalita Kumari, Kirti Kumar, Ratnamala, Shanti, Gurbachan, RamAvtar, Tarun Ghosh etc in it.

It is interesting to note the striking similarities in the musical career of S D Burman and Hemant Kumar though the latter was 14 years younger than the former. Both started their musical careers as singers in the 30s followed by composing many non-filmy Bengali and Hindi songs in Calcutta (Kolkatta). Both started their Hindi filmy careers as music directors under the banner of Filmistan – S D Burman in Shikhar (1946) and Hemant Kumar in ‘Anand Math’ (1952).

Today (8 september) is the birthday of S Mohinder, a music director of yesteryears who gave us some wonderful songs in the golden era of Hindi movie music. Born in 1925, S Mohinder composed music in movies like “Sehra” (1948), “Jeewan Saathi” (1949), “Shrimatiji”(1952), “Bahaadur” (1953), “Paapi” (1955), “Naata”(1955), “Shehzaada” (1955), “Kaarwaan” (1956), “Shirin Farhad” (1956), “Mehlon Ke Khwaab” (1960), “Picnic” (1966) etc. He is one of those music directors who were criminally underutilised by the Hindi movie music industry.

This is a very uplifting song, and a very dear memory that I carry from my radio listening days. The manner of rendition contains a conviction in the voice that simply establishes this sentiment to be true – “be a comfort to others, sacrifice your own happiness. . . in the end your own happiness will itself come to you.”
