Recently, I came across a rare song ‘saajan tumse pyaar karoon main’ from the film BADNAAM (1952) sung by Lata Mangeshkar. It was written by Hasrat Jaipuri and set to music by Basant Prakash. I always felt that this talented music director belonging to the golden era of Hindi film songs was side tracked by Hindi film industry for reasons best known to them. As a result, during his 30years of active filmy career, he was the music director in about a dozen films only, some of which were joint ventures with other music directors.

Prakash ji has written for the second time in ‘Readers Farmaishes’ requesting for the upload of this wonderful sad song in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar. The music composition is by that underrated genius – Ganesh. Prakash ji has mentioned that the song itself is not posted anywhere on the internet. So when I read this comment from Prakash ji, repeating his request for this song, I had to pull this out from my collection, and have posted it on YouTube today.

Some gap in communications ! I am surprised at myself. Almost like having a writer’s block – besides other constraints, of course. But then I said to myself, (after having received a few friendly reminders from some fellow bloggers, checking my whereabouts) – things in life will never be done, so time to get back into the groove. 🙂

Hindi movie Music basically has three major fields, namely singing, lyrics writing and music composition. All these are specialised fields. People who are good in two of these fields can be called musical all rounders.
That way Hemant Kumar was a true musical all rounder. He can be described as a great in music composition as well in playback singing. And that is reflected in this blog too where Hemant Kumar has completed his century of songs as a music director and as a playback singer both. To this date, he is the only artist in the blog to have done so.

So it comes as a huge surprise to me to realise that the song “Mann doley mera tann doley” from “Naagin” (1954) has not yet been discussed.

“Tum na aaye sanam shamma jalti rahi” is one of those rare gems which involves all B-grade names apart from the peerless Lata Mangeshkar herself.
It is her sublime rendering of this number on a lesser light of that period, namely, Vijaya Chowdhary, with B-grade Bollywood hero Ranjan sometimes in the frame.
