I happened to listen to this short song for the first time in today’s program on Radio Ceylon and instantly fell in love with it. It is from the film ‘Dhuaan’ (1953) under the music direction of Dhaniram. The first step in sending the post was obviously to check if it has been already posted. For this I usually open all the songs posted from the film and also read the comments herein.

HFM Songs Statistics by Year – 4

Year 1935

1935 – wow, what a year it was.  The pioneering spirit in the industry touched an epitome. The events, the people, the films – all proved to be significant milestones as also trend setters.  And in one field, an innovation happened, which changed the game once and for all.  The field – sound recording. The innovation – playback singing.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 28

It was a dark and stormy night.

OK, okay, I am just making it up.  It was not a dark and stormy night.  Delhi is well lighted in the nights these days, so it is hard to come by a dark night unless it is a power failure on a moonless night.  Plus being the month of November, and the onset of winters, no storms are likely.  Ah but how I wish I could start the story with this line. 😉

“Sultaana”(1934) was directed by A R Kardar for “East India Film Company”. This by now forgotten movie had Mazhar Khan, Zarina, Indubala, Nazir, Gul Hameed etc in it.

Missing Films of 1960s – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Hmmm, that is interesting.  As I review the list of missing films for 1962 prepared by Khyati Ben, then starting from ‘Baaje Ghunghroo’ (which was the last film we introduced in the previous segment of this series), I had to drop down to the seventh film below it (in alphabetical order) to reach a film for which songs are available.  After ‘Baaje Ghunghroo’, the films listed are ‘Balidaan’, ‘Bapu Ne Kahaa Tha’, ‘Bijli Chamke Jamuna Paar’, ‘Deccan Queen’, ‘Durga Pooja’ and ‘Fakiron Ki Basti’ – six films for which songs are not traceable.

Missing Films of 1960s – 5
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

So far in this series, we have added four new films to the blog.  As per the analysis done by Khyati Ben, 104 films were produced in the year 1961.  Of these, 12 films were not yet represented here.  The four films that I have been able to track down and add here are – ‘Muraad’, ‘Room No. 17’, ‘Shola Jo Bhadke’ and ‘State Express’.

“हर साल का अपना एक सिक्का होता है”
(Every year has its own identification, its own currency).

As we review the historical record of look at the early years of Indian Cinema, true to the expectations, these formative years were very eventful and very exciting.  Any new art form, or a new concept, always attracts people who are the explorers, the adventurers – people who relish the excitements and risks of trying out the new.   Thus these formative years are full of new milestones, new people, new landmarks.  Their historical record makes for a very interesting read.

Genius of Jaidev – 34
———————————

One more song from the film  ‘Jiyo Aur Jeene Do’ is a surprise song for me. I heard it for the first time due to the ‘meherbaani’ of ‘uperwala’. (Geographically Delhi is ‘uper’ to Mumbai.)  The second surprise is the sweet voiced singer.  Suman Kalyanpur has sung only two songs with Jaidev. (as far as I know)  The other one is “Mai Teri Dasi Tu Mera Data” from the 1972 film ‘Bhavana’.  After hearing this song every music lover would opine in unison, that they should have come together more often. One more rare occurrence is lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri providing lyrics for Jaidev.  I request our statisticians of the blog to make me ‘buddha’ (dictionary meaning – ‘one who knows’) about these statistics.
