This song is from Master Bhagwan’s film ‘Damaad’ (1951). In the decade of 1940’s, Bhagwan had specialised in low budget C grade action and stunt films. Usually his films would be completed in Rs. 60 to 70 thousand rupees only. He used to churn out films after films with the same set of actors with almost the same story in all his films. The audience of Master Bhagwan’s films came to the theatre to see his antics and comedy, coupled with action scenes of fighting and incredible stunts.

Genius of Jaidev – 34

One more song from the film ‘Jiyo Aur Jeene Do’ is a surprise song for me. I heard it for the first time due to the ‘meherbaani’ of ‘uperwala’. (Geographically Delhi is ‘uper’ to Mumbai.) The second surprise is the sweet voiced singer. Suman Kalyanpur has sung only two songs with Jaidev. (as far as I know) The other one is “Mai Teri Dasi Tu Mera Data” from the 1972 film ‘Bhavana’. After hearing this song every music lover would opine in unison, that they should have come together more often. One more rare occurrence is lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri providing lyrics for Jaidev. I request our statisticians of the blog to make me ‘buddha’ (dictionary meaning – ‘one who knows’) about these statistics.

At last, “Mere DHIRaj ka badla SuDHIR-ji ne de hi diya.”
For quite a long time I was ignorant about this song except its mention in HFGK. Sudhirji, not only searched out the song for me, but also posted it on ‘YouTube’ to save my labour. I am going to thank him further, when as per his promise, he is going to colour-code the lyrics.

“Houston, we have a problem.”
This famous quote from the Hollywood film ‘Apollo 13’ (1995) pertains to the problem on board NASA’s unsuccessful mission to the moon. Though there is a different version to the line from NASA’s actual transcript, the phrase has now become part of everyday language for reporting any kind of problem.

Amitabh – The Later Decades – 4
—————————————————–
Almost ‘Lolita’, but not quite so. In the book, the young nympho is only 12 years old, and the old man is actually a pedophile. In this Hindi film take off, the young girl is 18, and the old man is not a pervert, but is actually in love. And for all that matters, for all the time it matters, it is a two way love between the girl and the old man.
Around the time this film was relased, a joke was doing the rounds. Q: What is the height of good luck? A: Amitabh in ‘Nishabd’.

MISSING GEMS FROM THE GOLDEN 50s…. Song No….5
————————————————————————————
Today’s song is from the 1955 film ‘Faraar’.
We have already discussed the happenings in Hindi film industry in 1955, in the previous episode. Name of this film had not featured anywhere, simply because it was neither a famous film nor a very successful film. Its music too was nothing to write home about. Even in such a film, we find a gem or a song special for other reasons. I selected this film song for few reasons.
