“Paakeezah” (1971) which was the last movie of Meena Kumari was full of some beautiful songs. I as a pre teen disliked those retro songs at that time, but as time has passed, I find myself warming up to these songs. Indeed, these songs have grown sweeter and more melodious with passage of time.

Meena Kumari debuted in early 1950 and played happy roles most of the time. Many of these movies are lovely family entertainers where she would typically act with Kishore Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Daisy Irani etc.

“Gaban” (1966) is a movie that is not remembered much today, but it had a few nice songs. The iconic song “ehsaan mere dil pe tumhaara hai doston” is a song from this movie.

Lata Mangeshkar was very fond of a folk song that belonged to the village of her grandmother. In 1950s, she asked C Ramchandra to create a song based on this folk song and C Ramchandra created a superb dance song in “Aasha” (1957) that was picturised on Vyjyanti Mala. This song, which was written by Rajinder Krishan was “tu na aaya aur hone lagi shaam re”.

“Ek Nazar” (1972) was an eminently forgettable movie and it was duly forgotten. Few people today remember that this movie had Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri in lead roles.

This song from “Sadhana” (1958 ) did not have Sadhana in it, just as “Kalpana” (1960) did not have Kalpana in that movie. “Sadhana” had Vyjyanti Mala and Sunil Dutt in lead roles.
