How do you feel when a family member achieves something spectacular? Atul is my family, not only as a fellow blogger, but also because both of us started our professional career at the same Institute. This was a small, beautiful, self-contained place, tucked away in a town back of beyond, at the foothills of a hill (which was literally called पहाड़ी). This Institute was a British creation in 1927, with exceptional facilities thrown in: indoor swimming pool, indoor badminton court, squash court, tennis courts, football field, table tennis, billiards table, lounge, dark room for photography (the world was not digital then), and a huge golf course just outside the complex. Four years of our most exciting young days in this ambience, the life-style, and the traditions created a strong life-long bond with the Institute, and among the alumni. As I entered a few years earlier, I am especially delighted by the awesome achievement of my younger brother, The Incomparable Atul. As he completes the magical number of 10,000 posts I convey my heartiest congratulations to him and all the regular contributors who have made it possible.

Folks who are avid browsers of the internet in search of Hindi film songs and related information must be very familiar with another blog ‘Songs Of Yore’ (http://www.songsofyore.com/). Today, I am writing to introduce AK ji, the personality, who is the driving force behind this blog that is famous in the digital world, for its content and references. Last month, on 7th June, his blog ‘SoY’ celebrated its fourth anniversary. On the occasion, the lead post starts with the following paragraph.

The number 10000 is an important milestone. In cricket, batsmen aggregating 10000 runs or more in test matches and One Day Internationals (ODIs) are considered iconic batsmen. In athletics, athletes participating in 10000m run are regarded as persons of great endurance. It is the ultimate aim of long distance runners to win the 10000m running competition to prove their prowess. I find that there are 9 batsmen in test matches and 10 batsmen in ODI cricket who have achieved the distinction of aggregating 10000 and more runs. There may be nearly hundred athletes who have won 10000m run in recognised athletic competitions.

Sudhir ji, one of the Atulite stalwarts, kindly alerted me in mid-April about the impending big event of Bicenquinquagenary or the 10,000th posting on Atul ji’s Song-a-Day Blog sometime in May or June 2014 … and suggested that like other Atulites, I too should submit a special write-up on the occasion.

This Non-Film Raaga Maala is by Ustad Ahmed Hussain and Ustad Mohammed Hussain. The composition is unique and very complex. The two brothers have incorporated 9 different ragas in each Antara (total 18 ragas in two antaras). Each time they mention a raga, they sing that verse in that particular raga. It is very admirable that the duo has written the lyrics themselves.

THE JOY OF NFS (Song No. 10) Last song of the series
———————————————————-

In the early 40s through the mid 60s, Radio was the only common entertainer for every household. Of course the choice of Gramophone was also there, but only few people could afford to own a gramophone. I remember, our morning used to open with melodious Bhajans from the Radio. Those days’ Mumbai Radio Station’ ( from the beginning, it was called Mumbai Radio station only-not Bombay anytime. For Hindi service it was Bambai) used to start early at 5.30 a.m. It first played Shehnai and then very sweet Bhajans, for an hour or so. That is how Juthika Roy and D.V.Paluskar’s names were etched on the memory card for ever. To listen to their bhajans was a divine experience.

THE JOY OF NFS(Song No. 9)
——————————-

Manna Dey never achieved the kind of popularity that some of his more commercially successful contemporaries (Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh etc) enjoyed, but that in no way is a reflection on Manna Dey’s calibre as a singer. As a singer he had perhaps the widest range of them all. He could sing songs ranging from philosophical to comical with equal felicity. In his case, passage of time has helped enhance his reputation.

THE JOY OF NFS (Song No. 8)

Sachin Dev Burman was a titan amongst composers and singers of songs for Indian films and outside of them. Born on October 01 1906 in Comilla, about 100 kilometers from Dhaka Bangladesh, Sachin Dev Burman was a scion of the princely family of Tripura, now a state of India. His noble lineage is reflected in the grace of his musical creations spanning a period of 43 years until his death in Bombay in 1975.

THE JOY OF NFS (Song No. 7)

The word Non Film Song brings few names to mind immediately, like Jagmohan, Saigal, Kamala Jharia, Juthika Roy, Pankaj Mullick etc. I could never understand the reason and logic behind most NFS singers hailing from the Eastern part of India. Even Talat Mehmood went to Calcutta and sang all his famous NFS.

THE JOY OF NFS(SONG NO. 6)
——————————————–

City- Bombay
Date- 20th July 1972
Place- Harkissondas Hospital,Bombay

Few people were standing in the corridor . Anxiety, sorrow, helplessness and a little hope was clearly writ large on their faces. They were all quiet. No one was talking to anyone. Their body language gave away their agony and restlessness.
