Fabulous Foot Tappers – 2

Today’s selection is in the voice of Geeta Dutt. Coming to think of it, it is just these two voices that have the capacity and the capability to make a foot tapper song – Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt. I cannot think of any other female singer who can manage songs of the type we are discussing in this series. There could be exceptions but I cannot readily recall any right away.

The Wonderful Sounds of 1930s – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Listening to songs like this one, there are mixed feelings in the heart. There is a pleasant joyous feeling that such wonderful sounds from almost eight decades ago, are available and we can hear and enjoy them. There is also a regretful irritation, almost bordering on frustration as to why more such songs are not available. Why is it that all one can search and explore, and just one song is available from this film, and from many others. And for many more, even one song is not traceable.

Greetings to all as we celebrate today the 66th anniversary of independence of this nation. Over the years, we have enjoyed many songs, published on this blog and many not yet showcased here. Songs that celebrate the spirit of patriotism and nationalism, songs that celebrate the event of freedom for this nation on this day. The flavors and the moods of these songs vary a lot. From serious songs of nationalism, from songs that talk of struggles and martyrdom, from songs that exhort their audience to rise and protect, to the songs that celebrate the honor of this land and its people, to the songs that express joy of freedom, and songs that inspire hard work and nation building. So many poets have written such a variety of verses. Every Independene Day and Republic Day we post 6 to 8 songs, and yet there seems to be a treasure of such songs that is out there, still to be discovered.

“Aankhon Hi Aankhon Mein Ishaaraa Ho Gayaa”, this lovely melody remains etched in my heart, as my first introduction to a dashing young Dev Anand, as seen on a Doordarshan screening of the film CID (1956). Time would be sometimes early seventies, and as a pre teen kid I was in the home of a friend (we did not have a TV of our own), religiously attending the Sunday film session, that was the once a week diet of film viewing generally allowed to us kids.
