Fabulous Foot Tappers – 2

Today’s selection is in the voice of Geeta Dutt.  Coming to think of it, it is just these two voices that have the capacity and the capability to make a foot tapper song – Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt. I cannot think of any other female singer who can manage songs of the type we are discussing in this series.  There could be exceptions but I cannot readily recall any right away.

The film is unreleased.  As per available information, a film by the name ‘Jaasoos’ was planned by Filmistan.  The film did not get made.  There is no information available, even about the cast of actors that may have been considered.  So in all likelihood, the film never even got off the ground.  However, a set of 9 (or maybe 10) songs were created and recorded for this film.  Nine are available.  The recordings were done in 1957.  And after that, no news.  All we know is that the music direction for these songs was in the hands of Anil Biswas, and lyrics for the nine songs came from the pens of four poets – Anand Bakshi, Indeewar, Kaif Irfani and Saraswati Kumar Deepak.  This song is written by Saraswati Kumar Deepak.

I have read it or heard it more than once, that many production houses who worked like assembly line factories, would start off a film making project with creating or selecting songs, before anything else was even conceptualized for the film.  Chalo picture banaate hain – meant lets first pull together a set of great, unused songs.  The story and the screen play can be built around these songs later on.

I remember Alfred Hitchcock.  Once, on the television, they were showing the Hitchcock TV series, which he had made sometimes in the 1950s. In each episode of this series , Hitchcock makes an brief appearance in the beginning, telling us something about the series, about the specific episode.  I remember one of his intros vividly.  He started by saying that many people ask him how does he plan his films.  He said that he responded to such queries by telling them that the first thing he prepares is the music.  He then picked up a conductor’s baton, stood up, and did a mock conduct of an invisible orchestra.  As he motioned and gestured the conductor’s movements, orchestral music continued to play in the background.  Then he jabbed his baton in a specific direction and gunshot is heard.  Using the invisible orchestra he is conducting, he creates all the special sound effects that can be present in a mystery film.  After a 2 or 3 minutes of this mock orchestra, he motions the end.  Music stops playing.  Then he continues saying that we create the music first, record it, and then he sits with his writers’ team, and they write a mystery story to align with the flow of music and sound effects.  And then he had a good laugh.  I think the Hindi film producers and directors have taken a cue from Hitchcock.  They will first create a set of songs, and then weave a story around them, such that songs and the storyline jell together.

Maybe that is how this unmade film ‘Jaasoos’ got started.  Nine songs are present, without any other information.  Maybe they could not write a story to fit in these songs.  If they had, this song would have easily fit into a dance situation, likely to be performed by a Helen or a Cuckoo.  But whether or not the story is there, the song itself is an A grade topper.

Listen and enjoy.  And listen again.

zara soch samajh nadaan
ye safar nahin aasaan
chal sambhal sambhal
mat machal machal
tujhe waqt ne lalkaara
choo mat

tadpaayega tujhe
tarsaayega tujhe
ye husn ka angaara

toofaan mein kashti hai
kuchh der ki masti hai
toofaan mein kashti hai
kuchh der ki masti hai
lehraati hui
bal khaati hui
maujon ka yahi naara
choo mat
choo mat
choo mat
angaarey hain
mat chhoo
angaarey hain
mat chhoo
tadpaayega tujhe
tarsaayega tujhe
ye husn ka angaara

ye husn jalaa dega
manzil ko bhula dega
ye husn jalaa dega
manzil ko bhula dega
phoolon ki gali
kaanton mein dhali
tu laut jaa banjaara
choo mat
choo mat
choo mat
angaarey hain
mat chhoo
angaarey hain
mat chhoo
tadpaayega tujhe
tarsaayega tujhe
ye husn ka angaara
