Akele hain chale aao

“Raaz” was a Rajesh Khanna movie produced in 1967, before he had become a superstar. In those days, Rafi used to be the playback singer for male lead, and that is indeed the case in this movie.
This song “akele hain chale aao” has been sung by Rafi as well as Lata. Personally, I like the Rafi version more.

“Apna Desh” was a movie that appealed to majority of movie goers. It had almost every thing that the movie going janta wanted. In those days, movie going public were undergoing a change of taste. Movies where hero sang sad songs and got bashed by the villains were proving unpopular. People wanted the heroes of 1970s to be more assertive and active than just singing sad songs.

Rajesh Khanna, the superstar of late 1960s and early 1970s had fans swooning over his mannerisms. Whatever he touched turned to gold those days.
Maryada was a movie where he acted opposite the ageing heroine Mala Sinha. This movie, though largely forgotten now, had some awesome songs. One Mukesh song from this movie, viz “jubaan pe dard bhari daastaan chali aayi” has already appeared in this blog.

This is one of the iconic songs of the days when I was growing up as a young impressionable kid. This song was everywhere in 1970, blaring out from loudspeakers as well as radios.
As with most popular songs of those days, this song had appealed to all just on the merit of the audio. People like me had no idea which movie this song was from and how it was picturised. Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music and Anand Bakshi’s lyrics, along with Lata’s voice were all we needed to enjoy this song.

It was one of the most popular songs of 1971 as far as I was concerned. And I guess one can say that for many other songs, that is how good the songs of 1971 were.
This song could be heard frequently on radio and loudspeakers those days. I knew that the movie was from Rajesh Khanna starrer “Dushman”, but that is all I knew. It is only recently that I have watched the video clip of this song and then I came to know that Rajesh Khanna goes to a kotha, gets drunk and sings this song.

I grew in that era when masses would run away a mile from classical songs or classical dances. There were few takers for such kind of art.
Those days, some bollywood makers on a shoe string budget would make movies different from mainstream movies. Such movies earned rave reviews and critical praise, but these movies were rejected by masses. Film festivals were often the only place one could watch such movies.

It was one of those Rajesh Khanna movies that I watched when it was released in 1970s and thoughroughly enjoyed the movie. Those were the days when the era of Hero singing sad songs throughout the movie and getting bashed by the villain ( Pran, typically) was coming to an end. The new age hero of 1970s took it lying down only till the interval and then took to action in the second half. “Apna desh ” was one such movie.

Kishore Kumar has sung lots of songs that could be described as happy, romantic, comedy, sad etc. But there was one category of song where Kishore has not figured too many times. And this is the category of ghazal.
Here is a song that could be called a ghazal. If it is not so, plese correct me. This is a Kishore Kumar solo song, and quite a nice song. Yes, it is picturised on Rajesh Khanna. How did you guess that ?

Some day I will make a list of all the sad songs of Mukesh, and then I will analyse them to find out which song expresses which kind of sadness. I may be able to identify scores of types of sadnesses listening to Mukesh’s songs, and then I will present my thesis to an university and take a doctorate. Not a bad idea, I think.
