Today’s song is from a Costume film- Jai Bharat-1936.
It was a Wadia Movietone film. It was produced by JBH Wadia and directed by his brother, Homi Wadia who also wrote the story and screenplay. The dialogues were written by Munshi Sarfarash. Music was by Master Mohammed, who also acted in this film. There were just 6 songs in this film, much less compared to the average of 9 songs per film for the period 1931 to 1940. 5 songs were written by Pt. Gyan Chander and today’s song was by Azeem. Gyan Chander mostly wrote for Wadia films. From 1936 to 1940, he wrote about 30 songs in 15 films.

Today’s song is from a film which is almost 90 years old – Chhaaya-1936.
This was the first Marathi/Hindi bilingual film made by Huns Pictures, Bombay – a banner owned by master Vinayak along with 2 others. The other partners were Baburao Pendharkar (actor/director) and Pandurang Naik (ace Cinematographer). The film was directed by Master Vinayak. Music was by Dhamman Khan. The film story, dialogues were translated by Pt. Indra, who also acted in this film. He wrote all the 14 songs of the Hindi version.
This was the period of tragic films by Saigal. His famous film Devdas, based on a story by Sharat Babu, became famous and popular all over the Indian subcontinent. This led to a trend in other languages to make tragedy films, in which the Hero dies. In the original Bangla language film, P.C.Barua had acted as Devdas. K.L.Saigal acted in its Hindi and Tamil version, singing 2 songs in the Tamil version. Barua directed the Bangla, Hindi and Assamese versions.
Film Chhaya-1936 was also based on this pattern, where the hero dies. Initially it was thought that such tragic films would not succeed, but film Chhaya became a Hit film. It won accolades from the public and the critics equally. It won many awards too. The cast of the film was Vinayak, Leela Chitnis, Ratnaprabha, Baburao Pendharkar, Indira Wadkar, Pt, Indra, Anant Marathe etc.

Today’s song is a Qawwali from the film Hurricane Hansa-1937.
The Indian film industry was still in its childhood in 1937. It had been just 6 years since the first Talkie film was made in India. The initial years were of experimentation. The filmmakers were trying various topics in their films.
Indian audiences may be from different states and languages, but Mythological and Stunt films were common favourites all over India. From the first decade when the first silent movies were made till the 1960s, these two genres continued unabated.
Most of us like to see films, be it on a TV, in a cinema hall, or through DVD. Some like old films, some like new films. Did you ever see films like, Khooni Khanjar, Dagabaj Doctor, Shaitan ka paash, Char chakram, Daku Rani Talwarwali, Jaadu ka dandaa, Zinda Laash, Revolver Rani, Sinbad-Aladdin-Alibaba, Flying man, Fighter Sheela, Khooni Darinda, Tarzan aur Jadugar, Tarzan aur Jadui Chiraag, Golden Gang, Murde ki jaan khatare mein, or Jadui putli ?

Today’s song is from the film Usha Kiran-1952.
In the month of September-2014, I had started a series on this Blog, titled “songs from Artists’ name films”. It ran from 18-9-2014 to 8-10-2014. I covered 10 films like Madhubala-1950, Nargis-1946, Veena-1948, Renuka-1947, Madhuri-1932, Hurricane hansa-1937, Zubeida-2001, Kamla-1946 and Asha-1948. When I came to the 10th and the last film Usha Kiran-1952, I realised that actress Usha Kiran was not in the cast of that film. In all other films, then discussed, the titled actress was in its cast. I was shocked. Nevertheless, I wrote the article and sent it for posting. But then on, I became alert and checked all the films selected for any series, fully and carefully.

#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #
————————————————————————
(Debutant Movie- Batohi-1949)
I was specifically looking for a devotional song. While going through the Geet Kosh Volume –II (1941-1950), I come across this pleasant surprise which I am presenting here today.
I had come across this title ‘Batohi-बटोही’ in Geet Kosh (1941-1950) in the past under the list of Un-Released movies. (Those days the songs from this movie were not available on internet ).
Searching for word ‘‘Batohi-बटोही’ on this blog yields only one result. This word appears only in the famous song ‘kaun disaa mein leke chalaa re batohiyaa’ from “Nadiya Ke Paar”(1982)
Coming to the movie ‘Batohi-1949’, very less information is available about it in the Geet Kosh. The name of the director for this movie is not given. However some sources on internet mention the name of the director as Kumar Menon. He directed this movie for T.K. Screen Classics. The cast of this movie had Bharat Bhooshan, Indu Pal, Krishna Murari, Beena Pal, Kesari, Shivraj, Sapru and others.

Today’s song is from a confusingly titleed film-Anban-1944.
Hindi film titles are sometimes funny and sometimes confusing. Funny, we can understand but confusing titles can cause problems. I can understand the same titles for films. There are hundreds of such examples. Same titled films can be found from 2 to 7 films. Yes. Film title ” Insaaf’ was used for 7 films from 1937 to 1997 – one each in every decade !
When titles are similar but not exactly the same, they can still cause confusion. Here are some examples….. Aajkal and Aaj aur kal, Aarsi and Aarti, Shadi ke baad and Shadi se pehle, Agent 1-2-3, Agent 777 and Agent 999, Lagaan and Lagaam, Daanaa Paanee and Dana Pani etc etc.
Today’s film also falls in this category. There was a film called Aanbaan and this is Anban. For several years I was confused, but when I read in a Film magazine that this is Un-bun (discord or rift in English), my confusion was cleared. (Aanbaan means dignity or pride in English).

#The Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
————————————————————————
Today 20th August 2025 is the forty-first Remembrance anniversary of music director Avinash Vyas ((21 July 1912 – 20 August 1984). On this occasion I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Dashaavataar-1951’ where Avinash Vyas was the music director.
After getting associated with this blog I had got many opportunities to listen to and share the songs composed by Avinash Vyas ji. Though I was not aware of his great contribution towards Hindi Cinema and Gujarati Cinema and Non-Film music in Gujarati. In my childhood I must have watched many black & white Hindi movies where music was composed by Avinash Vyas, but I was unaware of this fact. However, the song ‘tere dwaar khadaa bhagwaan’ from ‘Waaman Avtaar-1955’ is my all-time favourite and I would also like to mention the songs from ‘Chakradhaari-1954’ which I watched during my stay at Nagpur (exactly nine years back around this time i.e. 15/16 August 2016) where I liked all the wonderful songs this movie has.

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
———————————————————————
In this post I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Badmaash-1969’. This movie was introduced on this blog by our Shree Sudhir jee with its song ‘uthhaa palkein milaa nazren’ on the blog. This movie was then a ‘missing movie’ for the blog. I guess this movie was a very rare and obscure movie and it continues to remains so.
“Badmaash-1969” was a stunt movie which was directed by B.J. Patel for Saras Chitra, Bombay. It had Sheikh Mukhtar, Helen, Chandrashekhar, Padma, N.A. Ansari, Vishva Mehra, Dalda, Shashimala, Satyen Kapoor, Jilani, Chandrakala, Surya Kumar, Bhagwan, Rachna, Jayshree, Satish Vyas, Nawab, Jaswant, Ajit, Abdul Sattar, Nanak, Motu, Nandini Desai and others. This movie ‘Badmaash-1969’ has four songs composed by Avinash Vyas. Lyricist for all the four songs is Anjaan. The singers list mentioned in HFGK has Krishna Kalle and Mahendra Kapoor as singers for this movie. However for one song the singer’s name is not mentioned in HFGK.

Today’s song is from the film Taara-1949.
Made by New Bombay Theatres, Bombay, the film was directed by R.D.Parinja. He started his career as a Cinematographer in Bombay Talkies in its heyday.
He filmed Izzat, Prem kahani, Jeevan Prabhat, and Savitri-all 37 films, and then Kangan,Azaad,Jhoola, Bandhan,Naya sansar and Kismet.
When he was in Bombay Talkies, the German pair of Director Franz Osten and Cinematographer Joseph Wirsching were also there. He must have learnt a lot from them(or did he ?).

We in this blog have achieved several milestones, but this milestone is something in its own league. Today we are celebrating a humongous individual milestone. With this post, Lata Mangeshkar reaches 4000 songs as a playback singer in this blog !
More than one decade ago, She had touched 1000 songs in the blog as the blog itself touched 3000 songs. Imagine, today she alone touches 4000 songs in the blog.
I had run a series on Lata Mangeshkar’s songs (yearwise) in the blog. That series, which ran every monday for 63 weeks (viz for one year and three months). In that series we had an indepth look at the list of songs that Lata Mangeshkar had sung in Hindi movies.
