When two people fall in love, it is the boy that is traditionally supposed to take the initiative and the girl has to wait for that initiative to come, which often never comes, if the boy is someone like Amol Palekar in Bollywood movies of 1970s.

This song from “Professor” is shot on outdoor locations, perhaps in Kashmir (Correction- in Darjeeling, as pointed out by Shontou). The song is sung by Rafi and is picturised on Shammi Kapoor. The rolypoly heroine, Kalpana is also there in this song and she appears rather sore at Shammi Kapoor throughout the song. It seems to me that Shammi kapoor’s charms seem to have cut no ice with her in this song.

What are the odds of you walking on a beach and stumbling upon gems every few steps ? Well, I have been exploring Bollywood music and I am coming across gems after gems. In some cases, I at least knew the names of the movies, and in some cases, I was not even aware about the name of the movie. This song swept every award that it was eligible for. This song from “Sasuraal” was the top song in Binaca geetmala final of 1961, and Rafi won Filmfare best male singer award for this song. This was the second time one particular song won these two coveted honours. Rafi himself had achieved the same distinction in the previous year for “Chaudhvin ka chaand ho” for “Chaudhvin ka chaand”.

This song was written by Shakeel Badayuni and music was created by Ravi. Shakeel Badayuni was a lyricist who usually worked only for Naushad. When he was signed up to work for this movie, he came up to Ravi, grabbed Ravi’s hand and told him “I have never worked with an outside production. I am nervous, please cover up for my deficiencies”. Such humility ! This lyrics must go down as one of the greatest lyrics written in Bollywood movie history.

Here is yet another song that I had never heard before. And when I heard it, I was amazed how such songs should have been lost to the fans of bollywood music fans. Now thanks to internet and services like youtube, many such songs are coming to the notice of fans once again.
