“Around The world” (1967) which is an abbreviation of “Around the world in eight dollars” was basically a movie where Raj Kapoor and Jayshree are seen going on a world tour. Most tourists go to their destinations to watch those places and soak in the atmosphere there, whereas our lead actors go there to sing songs. 😀

In Hindi movies we often seen family album masquerading as a movie (viz the movie “Kal Aaj Aur Kal”), or a wedding album masquerading as a movie (” Hum Apke Hai Kaun”). Likewise they was a world tour album that masqueraded as a Hindi movie. This movie was called “Around the world in eight days”, which was shortened to “Around the world”.

Shankar of Shankar Jaikishan promoted Sharda in a big way and this led to considerably difference of opinion between the duo. Sharda had an unconventional voice and she obviously was limited in her range compared to say Lata who was the female singer of choice by default for them till then.

I have heard this song “jab bhi ye dil udaas hota hai” quite a few times in the past and I have liked it too. It is an ideal song when you feel sad, as the song says.

As timepass songs go, this must qualify as among the very best timepass songs of all time. The public at that time certainly enjoyed it, as shown by its Binaca geetmala ranking of number 4 in the Binaca geetmala final of 1970.
The topic of the song is an interesting one. Manoj Kumar is a country bumpkin and two girls decide to play matchmakers for him, and show him diferent girls. But Gangaram, our village bumpkin finds himself under severe culture shock on watching the modern girls of 1970, and expresses his disapproval in no uncertain way.
