In Bollywood movies, we often have songs about places, viz cities, towns etc. Out of all these cities, there have been quite a few songs on Bombay. For instnace, “ae dil hai mushqil jeena yahaan, zara hatke zara bachke ye hai Bombay meri jaan” is still regarded as a song that aptly describes Bombay ( now Mumbai).

Till 1960s,when India was in terrible shape on almost all fronts,and Indians depended on foodgrain imports even to feed themselves, it was the Prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri who decided that India needed to be self sufficient in growing food stuffs. He also gave a slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kissan”.

I have mentioned it earlier that “Mera Saaya” was full of outstanding Lata-Madan Mohan songs that have gone on to become immortal evergreen songs. But pray which of “Mera Saaya” songs became the most popular those days? It was none of these Lata songs, or even the Rafi one.

Kashmir ki kali hoon main

Till recently I thought that this song “Kashmir ki kali hoon main” was the title song of “Kashmir ki kali”. Only when I began to research this song that I realised my ignorance. It is indeed a Shammi Kapoor song, but from “Junglee” and its music was by Shankar Jaikishan (“Kashmir ki kali” had its music by O P Nayyar).

While watching very old movies, one big attraction for me is to watch how places looked like in those days. It is especially for this reason that I watch movies of 1950s and earlier.
