Hindi movies called “Dost” seem to get released every decade. The first such movie was “Dost” (1944) and it had memorable music by Sajjad Hussain. In my days, another movie by this name, viz “Dost” (1974) was released which had memorable music by Laxmikant Pyarelal. There was no movie by this name in 1964, though there was a movie called “Dosti” (1964), which again had memorable songs composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

In Hindi movies, lyrics tended to be laden with Urdu words mainly because the major lyricists of that time were more comfortable with Urdu words than Sanskrit origin Hindi words. The plea was that simple words were needed for the movies. Ironically, the words used in Hindi movie songs were not really common man’s words for those whose mother tongue was Hindi. So Hindi speakers had difficulty understanding many words in Hindi movies.

I thought I had already discusssed this song from “Subah Ka Taara” (1954). So I was surprised to get a farmaish for this song. On checking, I realised that I had not posted this song, or for that matter any song from this movie.
I clearly recall discussing this song in the past. So now I realise that I had discussed this song in my other blog while discussing Binaca geetmala, C Ramchandra etc.
Here is this wonderful song from “Subah Ka taara” (1954). This is a duet sung by Talat Mehmood and Lata. It is picturised on Pradeep Kumar and Jashree as a train song. What a joyous song it is. This song can be described as the title song as well as theme song of this movie as well.
Noor Lucknowi is the lyricist and C Ramchandra is the music director. What a timeless classic this song is ! Listening to this song certainly makes one’s day.

Lyrics
gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa
gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa,
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa,
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
toote dil kaa bandhaa sahaaraa,
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
saans khushi ki tan mein aayi
armaanon ne li angdaayi
jaag uthin ummeeden saari
jaag uthi taqdeer hamaari
kahin kisi ne door pukaaraa
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa,
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
murjhaayi kali kyaa phir se khilegi
murjhaayi kali kyaa phir se khilegi
khoyi huyi kyaa raahat milegi
kahin ye taaraa toot na jaaye
subah kaa saathi chhoot na jaaye
aankhon mein rah jaaye nazaaraa
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa,
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
gayi udaasi raunak chhaayi
raushni ab jeewan mein aayi
hansi khushi kaa chhedo taraanaa
naach uthe man jhoome zamaanaa
samaa suhaanaa pyaaraa pyaaraa
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa,
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
gayaa andheraa huaa ujaaraa,
chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa
In my bid to discuss all the Sajjad Hussain songs, I have made considerable progress. I have so far discussed as many as 40 songs, which is a big figure, considering that Sajjad Hussain composed only about 100 songs in Hindi movies.
