This is a song where the genius of Kaifi Azmi can be seen in his ability to express complex, complicated and involved feelings in a very coherent and understandable manner. Here is a duet sung by Talat Mahmood and Lata. The typical quivering voice of Talat Mahmood on Sunil Dutt may sound a bit odd now, but this did not stop this song from becoming very popular. Lata sings for Asha Parekh, then a newcomer. This song is composed by Salil Chowdhary, and the lyricist Rajinder Krishan came up with very nice and hummable lyrics.

It is a kind of song that provides your brain with a sort of mental massage to your soul when you decide to listen to it. Talat Mahmood’s voice had that soft silken quality. These kinds of song do not rely upon its picturisation to win you over. The voice is enough to do that. In the past 56 odd years that this song is in existence, it has built up a solid fan base for itself.
