Blog Day : 3508 Post No. : 14096

Today, 24th February is the birth anniversary of Talat Mehmood (born 1924).

There are approximately 650 film songs identified, as being sung by him. It is a known fact that during the decade of 1950s, Talat Sb spent more of his energies in trying to establish himself as an actor-singer. He had the presence and the looks of a leading hero, plus a voice that at one time had stolen the hearts of film goers and listeners. But the on-screen combination somehow did never strike a rapport with the audience, getting only a lukewarm reception at the box office. Rising from the mid 1940s along with the other mainstream singers, he allowed his ratings as a playback singer to falter, in his effort to be a singing start. Now, it is just a matter of speculation how the history of Hindi films and Hindi film music could have been different, had some different choices had been made by Talat Sb.

After discussing over 13600 songs in the blog, which is roughly 25 % of all Hindi movie songs created upto 1980 and nearly 40 % percent of all the available songs (my rough estimate), one may feel that almost all great songs have already been covered in the blog. May be we have covered majority of “well known” songs, but I keep discoveing great “lesser known” or “forgotten” gems almost on a daily basis. Some of them are such great songs to listen to that I want to hold them back for special occasions. But I find that there are so many of them and holding all of them back for special occasions would mean that I would have very few songs available for immediate discussion.

some people may think that this article is discussing the song “betaab nazar bechain jigar” from “Yaasmeen” (1955). No, that song was covered in the blog in 2008 itself. This song, like the “Yaasmeen” (1955) song, is also sung by Talat Mehmood. But this song is from a movie called “Behram Daaku”(1959).
