Here is a duet from “Sangam” picturised on Raj Kapoor and Vyjyanti Mala. The people involved in creating this song are the usual suspects, viz Shankar Jaikishan, Shailendra, Mukesh and Lata. This song is a party song, and this movie seemed to have quite a few party songs, I do not know why.

Here is a duet sung by Talat Mahmood and Lata. The typical quivering voice of Talat Mahmood on Sunil Dutt may sound a bit odd now, but this did not stop this song from becoming very popular. Lata sings for Asha Parekh, then a newcomer. This song is composed by Salil Chowdhary, and the lyricist Rajinder Krishan came up with very nice and hummable lyrics.

India of 1960s was a much more simple and uncomplicated nation, where cynicism about the nation and its leaders had yet to take roots. People actually looked upto the national leaders. Every household compulsorily had the pictures of national leaders on their drawing room walls. Framed photographs of Mahatma Gandhi, Rajendra Prasad, and Jawaharlal Nehru were there in all households.

This movie “Manzil” was one of the unsuccessful movies of Amitabh Bachchan, but this one song from this movie, viz “Rimjhim gire saawan” has become the stuff of legends already. It is one of the first songs that comes to mind when one thinks of rain songs.
