“Ek Naao Do Kinaare” (1973), though a recent movie by the standards of this blog, is by and large a forgotten movie. It was a Nitin Films production and it was directed by B R Ishaara.The movie had newcomers like Hina Kausar, Rakesh Pandey, Mrinal Mukherjee and oldtimer like Manhar Desai in it.

“Uphaar”(1971) was a Rajshree Productions movie. It was directed by Sudhendu Roy. Rajshree Productions had hit upon the formula of signing up newcomers for their movies instead of big stars. They relied on great music and heartwarming storyline to attract movie goers and this formula served them well for nearly a quarter of a century.

“Ilzaam” (1954) is a surprisingly obscure movie. This movie was a Talwar Films production. It was directed by R C Talwar. The movie had Kishore Kumar, Meena Kumari, Shammi, Jagdish Sethi etc in it.

The decade of 60s was the most prolific and busy for Usha Khanna. A very large body of work of music compositions created by her, came during these years. And all the music she has created is wonderfully hummable and still tingles the heart when one of her songs is played. The 1965 film, ‘Ek Sapera Ek Lutera’ is no different. Practically all the songs of this film went on to become very popular, although the movie itself was a B grade production, and did just OK on the box office. Produced under the banner of Dimple Films, Bombay and directed by Naresh Kumar, the film has lyrics written by Asad Bhopali and the music composition is by Usha Khanna. The star cast is a typical B grade lineup for those times, featuring Feroze Khan, Kumkum, Uma Dutt, Mumtaz Begum, Shyam Kumar, Indira Bansal, Tuntun, Ramavtar, Rashid Khan, Daljeet,Sheikh, Sunder, Gopal Ralhan, Rani, Madhu Apte, Krishna, Khairaati etc. The film is a costume action cum romance drama, that is based on the life style and culture of snake charmers and gypsies.

Asha Bhonsle – the name that conjures up the racy and spicy sounds of ‘udlayee udlayee udlayee o’, a voice that has a chirp, and an impish and naughty flavor to it, and the versatility that adorns thousands of music creations that have become a hallmark in the annals of Hindi film music. The second of the famous siblings of the Mangeshkar clan, Asha ji was born on this day in 1933. She started singing for films at a very young age of 10 years. Although her released recordings in 1950s were second only to Lata, she was considered as the singer for “bad girls” and vamps, and got the assignments that were turned down by Lata, Geeta Dutt and Shamshad Begum. Her voice started getting noticed from films like Sangdil (1952), Parineeta (1953) and Boot Polish (1954). And then came the real recognition of her talent in the mid 1950s, under the baton of OP Nayyar, with hits like CID (1956) and Naya Daur (1957). She became the voice of Helen, and has sung most of the songs that Helen has performed on the screen. Helen ji used to attend the song recording sessions personally, to better get a feel of how the song is to be performed.

Luteraa (1965) is a typical grade B action drama – a story of pirates and palaces and princesses. The main actors of this film are Dara Singh, Prithviraj Kapoor, Nishi, Helen, Hiralal, Jeevan, Maruti, Bela Bose and others. The storyline contains many threads, including brother separated in childhood, a scheming wazir in the palace who murders the king for the throne, the princess kidnapped, the pirates and what not. Given the star cast, this movie made a reasonably good impact on the box office in its time. But more than the star cast, it is the music of this movie that make it a memorable production. There are six remarkable songs by Lata, and a duet by Shamshad Begum and Kamal Barot. Of the six songs by Lata, four are dance numbers done extremely well, and the remaining two are romantic solos. The lyrics for this movie are written by Anand Bakshi, and the music is composed by Laxmikant Pyaarelal.

This song is remininscent of several other Rafi- dev Anand songs and one may guess that this song is composed by S D Burman. But surprise, surprise ! This song is not composed by S D Burman. This song is a Madan Mohan composition !

Baithhi hoon main nain bichhaaye

When one watches Hindi movies of the past, including their songs, and compare them with the present time, one notices that people back then had too much of time and patience. Means of instant communications were not there. People (namely the lady or parents) who will have their beloved husband/son gone to a distant place for work,will not hear from him for years, and they will patiently wait. One can not imagine people to have this kind of time and patience in today’s world.
