The signature sounds of “Morey Nain Baawre, Chham Chham Neer Bahaayen” (‘Sabak’, 1950) and “Badnaam Naa Ho Jaaye Mohabbat Ka Fasaana”(‘Shaheed’, 1948) are now memories almost as if etched in stone. Piece of music, as if, immortalized by the voices that sang them. Quite so, for the voice is also known as the Nightingale of Punjab.

I had never heard of the film ‘Baawraa’ (1950) until last week. While browsing on the internet, I came across an audio clip of a song from this film. The song was ‘saahil jo dubo de kashti ko saahil ki tamanna kaun karen’. I liked the lyrics and the music composition with Rafi’s voice giving it a finishing touch as per the mood of the song. The song in theghazal format was written by Amarnath Khanna and set to music by Krishan Dayal. The film was produced under the banner of Shri Durga Pictures and directed by G Rakesh.
