“Shahnaaz” (1948) is an obscure movie and little is known about this movie. In fact, there is uncertainty even about the title. I have seen the title being spelled as “Shahnawaaz” too in some site.

It was directed by P L Santoshi and the star cast had names like Rehana, Om Prakash, Mumtaz Ali, Paro, Ratan Kumar, Chandabai, Raj Kapoor, Rajendra, David Abraham, Tabassum, Radha Krishnan, Samson, Vijayalaxmi, Ramsingh, S. In Hindi movies, a female character singing a bhajan in front of the idol of a God used to be a standard scene from 1950s to 1970s. I have always wondered who pioneered this genre of songs. Now I believe that I have got my answer. Having watched a few such songs from the earlier days of Hindi movies, I have now come to the conclusion that Amirbai Karnataki could well be the first singer to sing such bhajans as well as the first actress to enact them on screen.

“Amar Raj” (1946) is a movie which was directed by Homi Wadia. The movie had Trilok Kapoor and Nirupa Roy from what little I can gather on internet.
