#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #
————————————————————————

The biggest festival of our country ‘Diwaalee’ is here and people all over, irrespective of their caste, creed, religion and class, are celebrating this festival. However, life is not the same for all (just like ‘kabhee dhoop kabhee chhaaon’). The migrant labors working away from homes and families wait whole year for this festival to visit their homes. Relatives of such peoples await them to celebrate the festival together. I too have gone through similar situations in my working life (But those details are not the part of this post today.)

Life is hard and life is not the same for all. For some it is a happy diwaalee and for some it might be ‘sad diwaalee’ too. Still, we have to keep our morale high and not give up hope.

Mukesh and his NFS – 09

In the aftermath of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, the team of composers Hunslal-Bhagatram, lyricist Rajendra Krishna and singer Mohd. Rafi created a marathon NFS overnight. The song was over 12 minutes long and was made into 4 parts probably to fit on the 78-rpm record disc. The song was an instant hit all over the country.

On the blog, this song was represented way back in 2012 and here is the link.

During the same period, Mukesh also recorded a song on the situation and circumstances.

Today’s song is from a complicated film-Bindiya-1946.

There were 3 films with this title. I fail to understand why film titles are repeated so often, as if there is an acute shortage of titles. There are hundreds of such titles which are repeated from two to as many as 7 times. I have never found such repetition in Hollywood films. If at all there are any, they may be very rare cases.

Bindiya was made in 1946, 1955 and 1960. I remember writing a post on a song from the film Bindiya-1960, in which actor Om Prakash had sung a song. This was in my series of ” songs by non singers”, somewhere in the end of 2012.

#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #
————————————————————————

The song being presented in this post is from the movie ‘Ahinsa Path’ from the year 1949. Very less information is available about this movie. HFGK Vol-II (1941-1950) lists six songs of this movie, but there is no information on its cast and director.

As per Geet Kosh “Ahinsa Path-1949” was a movie presented by ‘Aruna Productions, Bombay’. Harish Bharadwaj was the composer for this movie. The six songs are sung by Poornima Chatterjee, Harish Bharadwaj, Sahana Maitra and chorus. Lyricist’s name for the songs is not known except for one song which has been covered earlier on this blog. Some sources on internet mention Aruna BA as lyricist for the song under discussion.

We know that S D Burman sang about 150 Bengali NFSs in the beginning of his career. Most of them became very popular. In Hindi, the number is about 25. We have 5 of them on the blog.

Today on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, here is a lesser known SDB song. I couldn’t get much detail. Looks like it must have been recorded in the year 1948, in the days following Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. However some sources on internet mention the year as 1960 for this. Also this seems to be album containing more songs and titled as ‘Gun Dhaam Hamaare Gandhi jee’. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this song and its details please.

Today’s song is from the film Hamari Beti-1950.

The film was produced and directed by Shobhana Samarth, for her own banner ‘Shobhana Pictures’ Bombay. Music was by Snehal Bhatkar. Vasudev G. Bhatkar was working with H.M.V. and he had recorded some of his own songs as a singer. Impressed, Sudhir Phadke joined hands with him to give music to filmm “Rukmini Swayamvar”-1946. Being in service with HMV, Bhatkar could not use his real name, hence the pair was named as Vasudev-Sudhir. For more films, he used different names like B.Vasudev, V.G.Bhatkar and Snehal. In 1949, he left HMV to become a full time Music Director.

His first film was Hamari Beti-1950, for which he used the name Snehal Bhatkar- which continued till his last Hindi film, Sehme hue Sitare-1994. Snehal was his daughter’s name.
