“Bharthari” (1944) is by now a forgotten movie with hardly any information available on it. Thankfully we have our own inhouse encyclopaedia to look up to in the form of Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh. Here is what he has to say about this movie:-

“Maa Baap” (1944) is a movie about which very little is known today, no matter if there are sites that claim to give you “All about Maa Baap (1944),view video clips, reviews, story, stills, trailers, songs, wallpapers, synopsis, user comments, news,cast,crew..” about the movie. All that I have been able to gather about this movie is that it had Nazir Khan, Veena, Rajkumari Shukla, Yakub in it.

“Ismat” (1944) was an extremely obscure movie. Hardly any information was available about this movie.

I have discussed one song from this movie in the past. The comments by our knowledgeable readers, namely our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh as well as another reader, Mr Sami, on that post has given us some rare information about this movie. Now we know that this movie was produced by Fazli brothers and directed by Sibtain Fazli. The movie had Nargis and Jaani Babu in the lead, supported by Mehtab, Nandrekar, Bhudo Advani, Pratima Devi, Irshad, Ghori etc. The story had an interesting Muslim social story whereby Nandrekar the hero is married to Mehtab and then remarries to Nargis as second wife.

In K L Saigal’s films, the songs sung by most of other singers remained on the periphery as compared to his magic spelled songs. Even on Radio Ceylon’s programme on old film songs which used to be broadcasted between 7.30-8.00 a.m. in olden days, I rarely heard songs of other singers in K L Saigal’s films while K L Saigal’s song used to be the final song of the programme. Take for example songs of ‘My Sister’ (1944). There are at least two beautiful solo songs sung by Utpala Sen but as compared with Saigal’s four songs which were hugely popular in my younger days, I had not heard any of her songs from this film until I bought one 78 RPM gramophone record in early 70s on which one side of the record had ‘jal jaane do is duniya ko’. I heard her other song from the film only last year.

This is the 10th and the last song of the series- SONGS BY NON SINGERS.

For me it has been a very hectic fortnight involving a very busy schedule. Luckily, I was able to locate all the songs’ video and Audio on You Tube but not without the customary hiccups.

Collecting authentic information about old, fogotten artists was also very challenging. To get atleast 10 songs, I dug out about 30 songs from films of 30s to 70s.
