I had never heard of the film SANYASI (1945) until a few months back. The film was produced under the banner of Kardar Productions and directed by A R Kardar. The cast included Shamim Bano, Amar, Shyam Kumar, Ghulam Mohammed. I checked the available songs on internet and found to my surprise that there were 10 songs in this film out of which 7 songs were sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali (both solo and duets). These songs were written by Pandit Madhur and set to music by Naushad. Other than these, I am not able to get other details about this film such as genre and box office success or otherwise of the film.

About a month back, I stumbled upon a song ‘aankhen to huyi band magar dard jagaa re’ from the film BEGUM (1945) sung by Ashok Kumar. Until then, I had neither heard of this song nor of the film which had Ashok Kumar and Naseem Bano in the lead roles. I liked the song so much that I must have listened to it umpteen times. The song is written by Gopal Singh Nepali and set to music by Hari Prasanna Das (H P Das) whose name also I heard for the first time. From the Indian Film Trade Data website, I observed that H P Das had given music to 10 Hindi films between 1935 and 1948 including 2-3 films jointly with Manna Dey.

Excuse me, I am going to boast a bit here. In my last post here, on Dil ko hai tumse pyaar kyun sung by Jagmohan, I had written that I used to listen to the songs again and again till I knew them by heart. The lyrics of this song that I present today have been recounted from my memory of that song. I was checking out the robust discussion in the comments section of the previous post, and struck my head when I read in the comments that the lyrics were by Faiyyaz. It should have clicked in my head, because the song below has the line ‘Faiyyaz ki badnaam mohabbat ko dua do’.

When I was 20 I moved to Delhi and stayed with my aunt’s family in Delhi. She had a large family of 6 children. Four of her older children were married and had moved out of the house. Her youngest two, a boy and a girl, became my beloved companions. Love of art and sports ran in the family. My cousin worked for and played hockey for Northern Railways, in addition to that he sang beautifully. His younger sister drew and painted beautifully and worked as a commercial artist.
