Ah yes, another iconic song from the Golden Era is being reused. It no longer surprises me to continue discovering such reuse songs from the films of recent vantage. Here is this wonderful creation of Majrooh Sultanpuri and OP Nayyar Sb which is now used once again in the film ‘Bombay Velvet’ of 2015.

‘Phoolon Ke Haar’ (1951) was directed by GP Pawar for Shreekant Studio, Bombay. This ‘social’ movie had Nigar Sultana, Geeta Bali, Nasir Khan, Heeralal, Mangla, Sundar, Yashodhara Katju, Kamal, Bhupen Kapoor, Rani Shakuntala, Natyal, Rammurty, Madhav Kale etc in it.

Today’s song is from a costume film ‘Raj Pratigya’ (1958).
This is yet another film, with a story of King and Queen. I have seen this film and have its story with me. Otherwise also, the film’s title and the cast are a clear giveaway enough to declare this film as a Raja-Rani film. The only difference is, this film’s story is based on the background of 2 warring kingdoms, Magadh and Malawa, which existed in olden times in India. After seeing such films, one gets the answer why and how the Mughals or the Europeans could win in India and managed to rule it despite the population being majority Hindus and the rulers in a disciplined minority. The majority was busy fighting among themselves rather than with the invaders jointly !

Today’s song is from a folk tale based film ‘Naulakha Haar’ (1953).
The film was inspired by the famous folk tale of Rajasthan about the love story of Alha-Udal, with the background of 2 warring kingdoms. A lot of cinematic liberty is taken while writing the film story, in order to make the film appealing to more types of audience. Films on famous folk tales are not uncommon in the Hindi film industry. In fact they are a great source of imagination to form hundreds of stories, with desirable changes in the script. Hindi film makers have been making films on such traditional folk stories from all over India. When they exhausted such stories they turned to stories from Arabia and Europe too, besides our own Mythology and Puranas. Some of the love stories I remember offhand , which were made into Hindi films are….

‘Samaaj’ (1954) was produced by Ashok Kumar and directed by Vasant Joglekar for Ashok Kumar Productions, Bombay. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Usha Kiran, Shashikala, Anup Kumar, Agha, Nazir Hussain, Leela Mishra, Iftikhar, Sumati Gupte, Aroop Kumar (son of Ashok Kumar) etc in it. SN Banerjee and Dhumal were in guest appearances in the movie.

‘Hatimtai’ (1956) was produced under the banner of Basant Pictures and was directed by Homi Wadia. The cast included Jairaj, Shakila, Meenakshi, BM Vyas, SN Tripathi, Krishna Kumari, Menaka, Sheikh, Vasant Pehlwan, Dalpat, Sardar Mansoor, Habib, Mithoo Miya, Aga Shapoor, Ranibala etc. The film was made in Gevacolour which was an additional attraction for cinegoers those days. It was one of the most talked about films, may be because of its special effect scenes.

Today’s song is from an imaginary costume film ‘Son of Sindbad’ (1958).
Alibaba, Alladin and Sindbad were the popular characters during our school days. Not only books of their stories but also films made on them were the targets of all children in those days. It was a thrilling experience to get a book on one of these Heroes, as a gift on “Happy Birthday” ! I am not very sure if today’s young children read these stories. I doubt if they even know these names. These boys seem to favour Harry Potter stories, while the young girls are lost on reading Mills and Boon novels, I suppose ! The big fat book ‘Stories of Arabian Nights’ was the most sought after book (in spite of 5 copies) in our school library. Stories of Alibaba, Alladin, Sindbad the sailor, Hatimtai, Gul Bakavali etc enchanted us.
