July 17th is the birth anniversary of Snehal Bhatkar ( 17/07/1919 – 29/05/2007), one of the forgotten music directors of the Hindi film industry. The haunting image of a worn-out, white bearded face, with lines of age alluding to maybe a century of anguish, haltingly climbing down the service staircase in the deserted studio, wanting to reach the chair with ‘Director’ imprinted on its back. I was not aware of this name as a playback singer in Hindi film industry until I got a 78 RPM gramophone record of her song ‘mausam aaya hai rangeen’ from film ‘Dholak’ (1951) sometime in early 70s. But I was aware of the name Sulochana Chavan as the famous lavani singer of Maharashtra.

I have a 78 RPM record (N.50600) of the song ‘saathi na bane koi’ from film DHUAAN (1953) sung by Krishna Goel which was set to music by Dhaniram. Since I was not able to listen to this record (which in any case is in poor condition) for want of a record player, I have been searching for the audio clip of the same on the internet sites.
