Though most Hindi movie songs draw their inspirations from indigenous sources (classical music, folk music etc) there are songs that are inspired from western music. In late 1950s, rock and roll music had caught up in Hindi movies in a big way and there were quite a few such songs in Hindi movies those days. Music directors like C Ramchandra and Vinod, to mention a few, were composing quite a few rock and roll kind of songs those days.

“Deepawali” also called “Deewaali” means festival of lights in Hindi. There is another similar sounding unrelated word in Hindi called “deewaala” which means bankruptcy, which is nearly an antonym of deewaali. This word play of deewaali and deewaala is often used in common conversation by people.

There is a movie called “Fashionable Wife” (1959) which was released half a century ago. From the name of the movie, one can guess that this movie is about a lady who indulges in “fashion”, much to the disapproval of others. I have not watched the movie, but I have watched this song, and this song seems to confirm my guess.

Many fans remember “Ujaalaa” (1959) as one of the earlier Shammi Kapoor kind of movie. But Shammi Kapoor was not the only lead actor in this movie. Raj Kumar was also there in this movie, and he in fact may have been the better known of the two as well.
