During the period from 1940s to 1960s, we often had titles of Hindi movies based on Railways. Thus we had movies titled “Station Master” (1942), ” Rail Ka Dibba” (1953), “Railway Platform” (1955) , “The Train” (1970) etc. Much later in 1980s, we had a few more Railway based titles, viz “The Burning Train” (1980) and “Coolie” (1983).

When I was first exposed to Hindi movies as a young kid in 1960s, I noticed that the hero and heroine seemed to be the most miserable characters in the movie who looked sad and unhappy, and suffered at the hands of the villain (and/ or the society ) throughout the movie.

16th november 1966 was the day when Roshan, then at the peak of his career expired all of a sudden. That happened exactly 45 years ago and lots of water has flown under the bridge since. His two sons managed to have reasonable careers in Hindi movies, with one of his songs following in his steps as a music director. and his grandson, who was born several years after his death became a superstar of Hindi movies. As far as people of my generation as well as older generation is concerned, Hrithik Roshan is the grand son of Roshan and not vice versa. The fact that the first name of Roshan Lal Nagrath should be adopted as the surname by his sons and grandsons shows what a huge star Roshan was. His name sold, and it sells today, and it will sell long after Hrithik Roshan has retired.

Has anyone heard of a Hindi movie by the name “Black Tiger” (1960) ? I certainly had not. But just because I had not heard about it does not mean that this movie did not exist. This movie was very much in existence and it was a quintessential B grade movie. It was produced by an imaginatively named production house called Highway Pictures. The movie was directed by the legendary director of such movies, namely Akkoo. The “star cast” of this movie includes such B grade superstars as Nazma, Azad, Nadira, Habib, Sheikh etc.

Besides being an exceptional production in terms of characterizations and performances, the epic Mughal-e-Azam (1960) created by K Asif, was a musical bonanza too. Of the twelve brilliant creations by Naushad Saab and Shakeel Badayuni, eight are already posted on this blog. Here is the ninth musical offering from this film – a wonderful qawwaali in the tradition of baitbaazi, by Shamshad Begum and Lata Mangeshkar. The setting of this qawwaali is as follows.
