There are few south Indian singers who made a mark for themselves in the world of Hindi film Music. I think Yesudas is one of them who was followed by SPB etc. I am a child as far as knowledge regarding earlier singers is concerned. I am sure there might have been others before Yesudas or Dassettan as we Keralites love to call him {a matter of convenience for me to call myself a Keralite as far as this allegiance to this singer is concerned otherwise I am a proud Mumbaikar ;-)} .

Raag Maalikaa in Hindi Films – 6
=====================
This is a unique RaagaMaalika composed and ably written by music director Ravindra Jain. I have no words to describe the greatness of Ravindra Jain in his excellence to create this truly very different type of composition. His selection of singer Yesudas for this very difficult heavy classical genre is also very very appropriate.

Today (24 november 2013) is the 69th birth anniversary of Amol Palekar (DOB 24 november 1944). On this occasion here is a song from “Apne Paraaye” (1980). This movie was directed by Basu Chatterji and produced by Mushir Alam. the movie had the usual starcast of Basu Chatterji movies, viz. Amol Palekar, Shabana Azmi, Girish Karnad, Utpal Dutt, Ashalata Wabgaonkar, Bharti Achrekar. This movie was based on a Bangla novel of Sharat Chandra Chattopadyay named “Nishkriti”.

“Sunayna” (1979) was a Rajshree Productions movie. It was produced by Tarachand Barjatya and directed by Hiren Nag. The story of the movie was inspired from Charlie Chaplin’s “City lights” (1931). I must say that I quite loved watching the movie in a then newly built mini sized movie hall in Ranchi in 1979. One of the lasting impressions of this movie in my mind include the extremely hummable title song viz. Sunayna sunayna..aaj in nazaaron ko tum dekho aur main trumhe dekhte huye dekhoon. The other lasting impression was Jagdeep playing a fellow jailbird of Naseeruddin Shah who tries to help Naseeruddin Shah escape out of jail. Instead of Naseeruddin Shah, Jagdeep finds himself out of the jail. And from then onwards Jagdeep tries very hard to go back inside the jail, but to no avail. 🙂

I like the singing style of Yesudas. He has not done too many songs in Hindi, but his songs in CHITCHOR are still echoing in people’s ears. I have heard many songs of Yesudas in Malyalam. Though I did not understand the language, the voice of Yesudas was enough for me to enjoy them.

Hindi movie makers have always been on the search for a formula that would enable them to make hit movies. And interestingly enough, this formula does not remain constant rather it varies with time. Moreover, movies made on the same formula do not always meet the same fate. Some movies succeeed while others flop at the box office.
