“Moorti” (1945) was a movie produced by Ranjit Movietone. It was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The movie had Motilal, Khursheed, Padma Banerjee, Yashwant Dube, Kamal Jamindar, Kaneez, Tara Bai etc. in it. Only the first two names in the cast are somewhat familiar. I have little idea about the other actors in the list.

“Zeenat” (1945) is a movie that is directed by Shaukat Hussain Rizvi. This movie had Noorjahaan, Zohrabai Ambalewaali, Cuckoo, Shashikala (then a child), Baby Khursheed (later known as Shyama) etc. In fact, this movie seems to be a movie with mainly female actors . : D All the eight songs of this movie have been sung only by female singers, and that includes an all female qawwaali (Aahen na bharin shiqwe na kiye ).

There was a time when I ran away a mile at the prospects of having to listen to old songs. But now I especially like to listen to the songs of past singers who are not all that well known these days.

“Sharbati Aankhen” (1945) is by now an extremely obscure movie and very little information is available about this movie. The information that I have been able to gather (and it may be outright wrong too) is that this movie was directed by Ramchandra Thakur and this movie had actors like Vanmala, Ishwarlal, Agha etc.

Saigal Saab and Suraiyyaa were to be paired together in 3 films between 1945 and 1947. Tadbeer (1945) was the first such film in which these two singer-star sensations came together. Tadbeer is a social drama produced and directed by Jayant Desai. The film presented an impressive star cast that includes Saigal Saab, Suraiyyaa, Mubarak, Jillobai, Rehana, Salvi, Reva Shankar, Amina, Shalini, Raja Joshi and Shashi Kapur. (This last name is not the Shashi Kapoor that we are all familiar with).

This wonderful song is from the film Tadbeer (1945). The film was produced and directed by Jayant Desai, and featured KL Saigal, Suraiyyaa, Mubarak, Rehana, Jillo, Salvi, Reva Shankar, Shalini, and Shashi Kapoor as a child actor. Born in 1938, Shashi would be just seven years when this film was released. It is possible that this could be his debut movie or definitely one of the very first few movies that he acted in. (I have not been able to track specific information on this).

“Hain Sabse Madhur Wo Geet Jinhen Hum Dard Ke Sur Mein Gaate Hain” – so are the lines that Shailendra has written for the song in Patita (1953), echoing the words of another great poet, Percy Shelley who wrote (150 years earlier) – “Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought”. So it is not a wonder that the songs that tell of sorrow, are the ones that sound the sweetest and are the dearest to our hearts.
