In 1950s, it was difficult to imagine a music director making his mark without using the voice of Lata. But there were two music directors who achieved this seemingly impossible feat. One was O P Nayyar who never used Lata’s voice in even once in his career. Another music director who stopped using Lata’s voice in 1950s was S D Burman.

Talat Mehmood was trying his hands on acting in addition to playback singing in 1950s. His singing career suffered as a result. What is more, sometimes the music directors in movies where he acted would contemplate using the voice of some other singer for Talat Mehmood. That way, Talat Mehmood sometimes found himself in the same boat as Kishore Kumar.

“Phir Subah Aayegi” was a different kind of movie where all the action happens in one night. And despite such a small time span, the movie manages to have time for several songs. This movie, I am told is based on the story “Crime and Punishment” by Russian Novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky.
