This is a song from film Jaalsaaz-59. This film was made at a time when Kishore Kumar as a Comedian Hero was in his Top form and people used to go to theatres only to watch his antics and listen to the songs sung by him. Little importance was given by moviegoers to the, plot or histrionics in a Kishore Kumar film. There were other artists and movies to take care of good acting and good storylines, whereas Kishore Kumar movies offered something different, namely good laughs and entertainment, paisa-vasool style !

Today (1 october 2015) is the 96th birth anniversary of Majrooh Sultanpuri(1 October 1919 – 24 May 2000). He is easily the most prolific lyricist during the golden era of HFM before Anand Bakshi. Maintaining quality and quantity as well as great rapport with all music directors was the secret of his long and successful career.

The decade of the 50s and the 60s clearly belonged to Johnny Walker. From 1951 to 1969, JW worked in 142 films – an average of 6 films per year. This means, every 2 months a JW film was released. This is a very high average, which I feel many leading stars also must have found difficult to achieve for successive years. There must be very few to get this number. In the year 1955 alone his 17 films were running at a time in theatres ! In the period 1970 to 1989 he did only 42 films, which averages to almost just 2 films a year.

Today (31 july 2015) is the last day of the week as well as the month. But that is not how this date is remembered by music lovers. Most music lovers, whether casual music lovers or serious ones know this date like the back of their hands. It was on this day in 1980 that Rafi passed away. He was just 56 years of age at that time and his stars were on the ascendancy again when fate willed otherwise on that day 35 years ago.

The stock photograph that is available shows a very suave and handsome Sikh gentleman.  The beard is neatly packed, the moustache is starched razor sharp, and the turban is a perfect construct.  Six feet plus, with a very fair skin – all attributes put together make up a very attractive and becoming personality.  By his own admission, he labels himself to be a romantic – and that he had to be in love to be able to create music.  The others called him a “ladies man”.

Remembering Sardul Kwatra on the anniversary of his passing away today (6th July).

Today’s song under discussion is “Bol bol bol bol My little dove” from the film Baap Bete-59. The music Director for this film is Madan Mohan.

MADAN MOHAN. An Unique composer. A thorough Gentleman. Lata Mangeshkar had called him “The King of Ghazal”. He created masterpieces in her voice, which set high standards in films. Madan Mohan, however, could never combine Class with Mass appeal unlike other composers like Naushad, S D Burman or Roshan or Shanker – Jaikishen.
