21st January – the 57th remembrance day of the lively, lovely Geeta Bali – of the mischievous eyes and smile.
She was born Harkirtan Kaur in Amritsar and began her career at the age of 12. Her first adult role or heroine role came in 1946 i.e. at the age of 16. The film was ‘Badnaami’. Her popularity came with ‘Baawre Nain’ in 1950. She was seen in about 80+ films in her short career which ended with her untimely death in 1965.

96th birth anniversary of O. P. Nayyar
Today, finally we arrive at a Rafi-Asha duet on the occasion of 96th birth anniversary of legendary composer of beautiful songs, OP Nayyar. I am sure, I have long back looked at this duet and saved the link multiple times in different laptops/folders.
I, for one, am most happy that this was somehow missed by all regular contributors to the blog, and not yet posted. So that I am having a quintessential Rafi-Asha duet by OPN, which is written by Qamar Jalaalabadi.

Most Indian patriotic movies are jingoistic and boastfuul, but this patriotic movie sought to inspire Indians to make India great again through deeds and not by rhetoric. “Ghoonghat”(1960) was produced by S S Wasan and directed by Ramanand Sagar for Gemini Studios, Madras. This movie had Bharat Bhushan, Pradeep Kumar, Bina Rai, Asha Parekh, Leela Chitnis, Rajendranath, Rehman, Agha etc. This was a Madrasi style movie, but curiously enough, its story was inspired from a Bangla story. It was an adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s 1906 Bengali story “Noukadubi”.

The song, tum jo aao to pyaar aa jaaye zindagi mein bahaar aa jaaye was from a ‘B’ grade film, ‘Sakhi Robin’ (1962) sung by Manna Dey and Suman Kalyanpur. The song was written by a then struggling lyricist, Yogesh Gaud which was set to music by Robin Banerjee who was trying to establish himself as the music director in Hindi films but did not succeed. If this song was to appear in an ‘A’ grade film, probably this duet would have been sung by Mohammed Rafi or Mukesh with Lata Mangeshkar. Another popular song, na jaane kahaan tum thhe na jaane kahaan ham thhe from ‘Zindagi Aur Khwaab’ (1961) was sung by Manna Dey with Suman Kalyanpur set to music by Dattaram who was also trying his best to graduate from assistant to Shankar-Jaikishan to an independent music director since 1957.
