Today’s song is from the film Pyase Panchhi-1961.
The film was directed by Harsukh Bhatt, brother of the famous director Vijay Bhatt of Prakash Pictures. Lyricist Qamar Jalalabadi wrote 9 songs, set to music by Kalyan ji-Anand ji. Some of these songs had become popular during those times. The cast of the film was Ameeta, Mehmood, Agha, Mallika (Sister of Mumtaz), Leela Mishra, Jeevan, David and many others.

Every year, hundreds of Hindi feature films are certified by Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Just for a sample check, I found that for the years 1951-1980, on an average, 100-120 Hindi features films had been certified/released. I am sure the number of Hindi films certified/released in the subsequent decades must have increased significantly. There were many Hindi feature films which had been shot but got shelved or remained incomplete or if completed, remained unreleased. I checked on the websites of Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association (IMPPA) and Producers Guild of India (GUILD) for the list of such films. Unfortunately, no such information is available on the website. It is one more example of the poor upkeep of film related statistics.

Today’s song is from an obscure film called ‘Room No. 17’ from 1961.
This film is categorized as a ‘social’ film in the HFGK. I wonder on what basis it can be called a ‘social’ film. What I understand by ‘social’ category is when the film revolves around a family problem or a social custom. If not that, then at least the film should show a relationship crisis or an age old social evil or even a simple family dispute. But this film is nothing like this. The film story has 4 murders, 2 accidents, kidnapping, police encounter and multiple attacks by criminals. Embedded in all this there is a love story and a murder mystery. In my opinion, the film should have been classified either as a stunt/action film or a crime/mystery film.
