Among the ‘forgotten’ music directors of the golden era, Snehal Bhatkar is remembered for his immortal song kabhi tanhaayion mein yoon hamaari yaad aayegi. In my case, I remember him for an additional reason. Somehow I felt that he had an unique personality. I am not a face reader 🙂 but when I saw Snehal Bhatkar for the first time on TV some time in 90s (on one of the Marathi channels) he appeared to be to be a self contented man. He was in the TV programme to witness the renditions of some of his popular filmy and non-filmy songs by some young and budding singers. Sitting in the front row with his trade mark white Gandhi cap, he was enjoying the rendition of his songs without any nostalgic reactions on his face. Whenever I see his photographs – old as well as new ones, I get the same impression of a contented man.

The history of Rajasthan is a legendary saga of warriors and warfare over the centuries. The annals of Rajput clans date back to pre-Christ era, and the origins of the various dynasties are linked back into pre-history to the lineage of Lord Ram of the Suryavansh (Sun Dynasty). As per the chronicles of the Rajput dynasties, they trace their origins to Luv, the son of Lord Ram. Rather, these films carry songs that may not be all obscure, they have been popular, or at least played often on the radio, and are in the public memory. But the information about their creators, and the films to which these belong is not easy to relate.

I wonder if anyone has ever written a thesis on Hindi movie songs. There are so many topics to chose from if one thinks about it. How about the topic named “A study on the behaviour of a lady being pursued by a man singing a teasing song”.

The mention of the title “Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja” would immediately bring to mind the 1993 film starring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi. But no, we are talking about an earlier incarnation of this title, well almost 32 years earlier. Even though the year was 1961, and even though the lead pair of Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman were well established in their careers, yet this film, ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja’ (1961) failed to make an impact on the box office. And now, when one mentions this name, people do not readily connect to the earlier film. In other words, it has become an obscure entity, that many people do not remember now.
