Sometimes when I think back at how my taste in movies and songs has changed since I was a young boy, I can hardly believe that I’m the same person who, way back in the 70s, used to squirm in my seat whenever I’d hear one of those Lata Mangeshkar solos. 😉

So many lustrous gems of melodious beauty are still out there waiting to be re-discovered and re-played. Browsing through the YouTube, or my own collection, or just turning the pages of the Geet Kosh, is an exercise that generally does not fail to bring up a song that is unheard or heard and lost for a long time. I came across this lovely melancholic melody by Asha Bhosle, only last week. And since then, I have listened to it so many times. It is a wonder that the songs of sadness are melodies of such beauty. Remembering Mahendra Kapoor today, 9th Jan, his birth anniversary.
Mahendra ji was born in Amritsar, Punjab on 9th January, 1934. As a child and a teenager, he was very much enamored and inspired by Rafi Saab. Right from childhood, he had a very good singing voice and a penchant for singing, no doubt motivated by his singing idol. He received his education in music from some very well known names of that era, viz., Pt. Husnlal, Pt. Jagannath Bua, Ustad Niaz Ahmed Khan, Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan, and Pt. Tulsidaas Sharma.

This movie was being shown in an open space in my colony for free. Young kids like me and my friends , after suffering through the movie for almost half the lenth of the movie, could take it no more and decided to call it quits. “What is all this pyar vyaar, rona dhona, why cannot the hero indulge in some maar dhaad instead”, our leader wondered aloud, and the rest of the kids whole heartedly agreed.

“Dil Diya Dard Liya” (1966) is one of the first “old” movies that I became aware of as a pre teen kid, and my impression about old movies being melancholic stuff was mainly based on this movie, its songs and also its title.
