Today’s song is from a film with a funny title – Dhobi Doctor-1954.

I said the title was funny because during our childhood, I remember, a Bogus doctor or an RMP doctor was called ‘Dhobi Doctor’, because he would wash off the patient with his money without curing him ! But this film had nothing to do with that and it only indicated that a person from a Dhobi family was a Doctor.

Aah haa haa, what fun – “हम भी अगर बच्चे होते॰ ॰ ॰” and all the rest of the exuberant pandemonium that is involved in being a child – does it not give you a high of the mischievous anarchy that we have always enjoyed; sometimes secretly and most of the time overtly – “ना नौकरी की चिंता, ना रोटी की फिकर”.

To the child in all of us, who never grows up. I am sure you all know such ’children’. And I am also sure we all are very well acquainted with the person we see every day in the mirror, no matter whether there is hair on the pate to comb or no. 🙂  I dearly remember one of the managers I have worked with in the US, completely bald but very energetic – he always introduced himself as – “. . . a five year old imprisoned in a sixty five year old body”. And then, of course, we have our dear Bakshish Singh ji, who proudly claims his age to be 22-and-a-half years, three months and a few days, whenever you may ask him. And he has a stay order from the Supreme Court to back his claim. Too sad that I met him ten years after he got his orders; my stay order (from the same Supreme Court) stands at 32. 😀 😀

‘Phir milenge jaanewaale yaar dasvidaaniyaa…’

Some people contend that to say ‘good bye’ is to die a little. Readers may wonder why a post introducing a song should begin with this statement.

MISSING GEMS FROM THE GOLDEN 50s…. Song No….5
————————————————————————————

Today’s song is from the 1955 film ‘Faraar’.

We have already discussed the happenings in Hindi film industry in 1955, in the previous episode.  Name of this film had not featured anywhere, simply because it was neither a famous film nor a very successful film.  Its music too was nothing to write home about.  Even in such a film, we find a gem or a song special for other reasons.  I selected this film song for few reasons.

The name of Habba Khatoon, the Kashmiri poetess may not be familiar to many people. This name became familiar to me only sometime in 1987 when Muzzafar Ali ( of Umrao Jaan fame) announced his plan to make a film on the life of Habba Khatoon. Dimple Kapadia was taken for the title role with Vinod Khanna in the role of the first husband of Habba Khatoon. The title of the film was changed to ‘Zooni’, Habba Khatoon’s maiden name. The lyrics were to be written by Shahryar and Khayyam was to give the music direction. Muzzafar Ali believed that Zooni’s life was the powerful vehicle to project the real Kashmir. After nearly 20 months of shooting in Kashmir, the film was shelved in 1989 probably due to the rise of militancy in the Kashmir valley. I got my hand on a small video clip of the film on YT uploaded by Basheer Ali who was the Director of Photography for the film. From the content of the clip which also has a part of the song ‘rukh-e-dildaar deedam daras ko aaye preetam’ picturised on Dimple Kapadia, it appears that it was made as a part of marketing the film for international audience. The video clip is here.
