Shammi Kapoor discovered his calling as the actor we all know and admire in 1957 with “Tumsa Nahin Dekha”. It was followed by “Dil Deke Dekho” (1959) and the phenomenon of Shammi Kapoor was well on its way.

“Ziddi” (1964) is a movie starring Joy Mukherji and Asha Parekh. This movie has got some fantastic music by S D Burman. I have discussed as many as four songs from this movie including the stunning Raat ka samaa jhoome chandramaa .

Maanjhi meri qismat ke

Here is a lovely “maanjhi”(boatman) song with a difference. The song is very much a boat song, in the sense that Asha Parekh, looking young and pretty, is standing on a boat in a river and singer this song. And she is singing about “maanjhi”, but here “maanjhi” does not mean the boatman, but it means the man who will steer her destiny. Yes, she is singing this song about her beloved (Sunil Dutt).

It is a song that I have heard many a times right from my younger days, and I in fact had noted down the lyrics of this song in a diary that I used to maintain in 1970s. This diary had lyrics of songs noted down by me from radio as well as scorecards of test matches (noted down through radio commentary) that India played those days. 🙂

This evergreen song from “Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai”(1961) wears multiple hats. The song is a multiple version song in the sense that this song is sung independently by two singer, viz Rafi in one version and Lata in another version. The song can be called the title song as well as theme song. The male version of the song is rail song as well.

“Phir Wohi dil Laayaa Hoon” (1963) was a Shammi Kapoor style movie in which Joy Mukherji, a Shammi Kapoor clone had starred opposite Asha Parekh. this movie was a home production of Joy Mukherji’s family.

“Naya Raastaa” (1970) is somehow a movie that is largely unknown. It comes as a great surprise to me because it was an a grade movie starring Jeetendra and Asha Parekh.

“Shikaar” (1968) is not to be confused with “Shikaari” (1963) though I always confuse between the two. The confusion is further compounded by the facts that both these movies have the same singers and they have sung some fantastic songs in both these movies.
