Today’s song is from the costume/stunt film ‘Jungle King’ (1959). The film was made by Artists United, Bombay (the name reminds me of the famous Hollywood company ‘United Artists’). It was produced by a group calling itself ‘Four X’ (for reasons best known to them) composed of Morris, Akbar, Asghar and Haider. The director was Masood and the music was by the pair of Bipin-Babul. The cast was very interesting. It consisted of Shaaga, Haaydu (what strange names! Never heard them !!), Sheila Ramani, Anwar, Majnu, Kamal Mehra, Heera Sawant, Tun Tun, Kabban Mirza, Dambe, Doud, Badshah, Rampuri Mehmood, Elephant Laxmi and many others.

If I were to ask the question ‘what was the common between Shailendra, Jaan Nisar Akhtar and Nyay Sharma’, the obvious answer is that they were lyricists for Hindi film songs during the golden era of Hindi film music. There is one more commonality between them. All of them tried their hands in producing a Hindi film in the 1960s which resulted in great financial strains on them from which they did not fully recover. In fact, after the release of their films, their careers as lyricist was on the downhill and in case of Shailendra, it ended with his untimely death.

Reviving a wonderful qawwaali from one of those not so well known films, and yet a gem of a composition and a fabulous presentation. The film is Mujrim Kaun Khooni Kaun (1965). It is a social drama produced under the banner of Pratima Pictures, Bombay and it is directed by Ramneek Vaidya. The star cast includes Jairaj, Indira aka Indira Billi, Heeralal, Sapru, Shammi, Bela Bose, Asit Sen, Raj Mehra, Brahm Bhardwaj, Gopal Sehgal, Shyam Kumar, V Gopal, Mirza Musharraf, Sherry etc. The lyrics for this film are written by three poets viz., Anjum Jaipuri, Akhtar Romani and Naqsh Lyallpuri. This particular qawwaali is written by Akhtar Romani. The music composition is by Baabul – another one of the unsung talents that have produced absolutely A class music, but never really got their due recognition in the industry.
