Hullo Atuldom

Often when I read the title of some posts i.e. the name of the song associated with the post, I recollect some other song, may be of a different era. This has happened a number of times. Same goes with movie titles too. There are many movie titles that have been repeated over the years and our in-house encyclopedia, Sudhirji and Atulji have written a few posts regarding the same i.e. about titles that have been repeated.

As I was preparing this post I just googled the title “Bandhan” and I found it has been used about 17 times in TV and movie productions language and country no-bar – found a movie by this title in Bangladeshi cinema too (referred imdb.com). Looks like this is a favorite title of Bengali producers who make entertainment material- there is a drama too with the title “Bandhan” (got this too from imdb.com). Of course we do have movies which have words preceding or following “Bandhan” in their titles- “Bandhan Kachche Dhaagon ka”, “Prem Bandhan”, “Bandhan Anjana” etc etc.

But let us concentrate on Hindi movies. We have four movies with the title “Bandhan” in 1940, 1956, 1969 & 1998.

The years roll by – time stops for no one.

And, just like that, it is now 7 years since that day in 2012.

I still remember that day very well – I first got the news on Facebook.

One of my friends had posted “vaada tera vaada”, saying “RIP Rajesh Khanna”.

It shook me – I immediately checked Twitter for validation. (Now Twitter is known to post fake death news from time to time. Not so long ago, they had posted news of Mumtaz’s death – thankfully, fake.) But I wanted a second source.

Sadly, and I realized this very soon with a sinking feeling, the news on 18th July 2012 was not fake. Rajesh Khanna (or Kaka, as he was more affectionately known) HAD passed away. For the past year, he had been suffering from cancer – and the cancer had finally won.

It is composed by Ramchandra Pal, who was the joint MD with Saraswati Devi for this film. All the songs of this film were written by Kavi Pradeep.

As I discover more songs of ‘Bandhan” (1940), I cannot but help feel that this movie must have stolen the heart of the movie goers during its time and Leela Chitnis would have become a heart throb of public, in case she was not one already. What a lovely performance from her in this movie. In this movie, she plays a playful and cheerful girl who is forever prepared to play a prank or too.
