Main ban ki chidiya

Posted on: March 21, 2009

Even those who do not think much of old songs may have heard of this song or at least this movie. This movie called “Achhut Kanya” (untouchable girl) produced in 1936 was obviously made on a topic that was too far ahead of its time and the makers of this movie did a great social service by making a movie on this topic. It was the first out of only two movie that Mahatma Gandhi is reported to have seen, the other movie being “Ram Rajya”.

In those days actors needed to sing their own songs. Thus we have Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani singing and acting in this song. The song was written by J S Kashyap. This was the first time in Bollywood that a movie had a female music director. She was Khurshid Homji who composed music under the name of Saraswati Devi.

And this song is quite a well known song too. It is easily one of the most well known songs from the earlier days of talking movies of Bollywood.

Song-Main ban ki chidiya (Achhut Kanyaa) (1936) Singers-Ashok Kumar, Devika Rani, Lyrics-J S Kashyap, MD-Saraswati Devi

Lyrics

Main ban ki chidiya ban ke ban ban boloon re
main ban ka panchi ban ke sang sang doloon re
Main ban ki chidiya ban ke ban ban boloon re
main ban ka panchi ban ke sang sang doloon re

main daal daal ud jaaun
nahin pakdaayi main aaun
main daal daal ud jaaun
nahin pakdaayi main aaun
tum daal daal main paat paat bin pakde kabhi na chhodoon
ban ban doloon re
tum daal daal main paat paat bin pakde kabhi na chhodoon
ban ban doloon re
ban ban boloon re
Main ban ki chidiya ban ke ban banboloon re
main ban ka panchi ban ke sang sang doloon re
Main ban ki chidiya ban ke ban ban boloon re
sang sang doloon re

Ashok looks so unbelievably YOUNG!!!!! I guess he was really young in 1936 🙂

I would love to see this film one day.

Yes, before movies like this, I thought that Ashok Kumar was an old man since his birth.

I am hearing this song after such a long time !!!
Feels really good to hear this.

none can beleive tat ashok kumar was kishore da’s eldest brother aftr listening 2 tis amazing song 😉

Atulji,

Saraswati Devi’s first film as a composer was “Jawani ki Hawa” released in 1935. No song from that film have been featured in the blog.
I am next to very poor as far as songs from 30’s are concerned.
Maybe some senior’s and Arun Sir’s series on 30’s can clear this point.
